Deven Eastern, a defensive end out of Shakopee, MN, has signed with the Golden Gophers. The 6’6″, 280-pounder also had offers from Missouri and Nebraska. He committed verbally a year ago this week, days after receiving the offer from Minnesota.
As a senior at Shakopee High, Eastern recorded 56 tackles, 14 TFL, and five sacks as his team went 6-2. Presumably, opponents weren’t running in his direction very often, either. He also had a pass breakup, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Allen Trieu of 247sports.com is a fan:
“Big bodied prospect. Has length and height, but also has good bulk to him and can still carry 30-40 more pounds and be effective. Shows burst and explosiveness as well as straight-line ability to run plays down. Gets off the ball quickly at times and makes plays in the backfield. Longer strider who can cover ground in pursuit. Shows enough flexibility and bend to be able to get leverage… needs to improve with his hands. Has good upside and tools. Outside possibility he gets a look as an offensive tackle based on his frame and skill set. Still developing, but… we would not bet against him playing early in his career. Projects as a multi-year starter at the Power 5 level.”

It’s tricky to see where Eastern fits in the front four to start the 2021 season. He’s somebody who could be a late-season injury replacement if, as Trieu thinks, he gets into the lineup early. Playing regularly in 2022 seems more likely- although Eastern’s frame could make him an appealing option on coverage units before then.
