Josh Adkins Transfers to UTSA
UTSA is getting some much needed depth at quarterback as Josh Adkins announced he is transferring to the Roadrunners. Adkins, who is the product of Smithson Valley High School, will be transferring to UTSA as a graduate transfer. He started at New Mexico State for two years before electing to come back and play in his home city. This addition to the Roadrunner’s roster is important as the ‘Runners have been struggling at the quarterback position.
Adkins At New Mexico State
Adkins was average at best in his two years at New Mexico State. He was named a starter in his freshman year. He completed 222 of his 393 passes at 56.5 completion percentage in 2018. He threw for 2,563 yards with 13 touchdowns and nine interceptions. In 2019, he completed 275 of his 437 passing attempts at a 63 percent rate, a six-and-a-half point increase from the previous season. He passed for 2,588 yards to go along with 14 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.
Adkins’s usage in 2019 took a huge spike as he threw the ball 44 more times than the previous year. However, his efficiency also took a hit. He only passed for 25 more yards in this season even though he had 44 more attempts. But, the most concerning statistic was his decision making passing the ball. He threw 15 interceptions opposed to his 14 touchdowns. His decision making in 2019 was bad at best as he led the Aggies to a poor two win and ten loss season. This ranked the Aggies 121st out of 130 teams in the NCAA. While these numbers are disheartening to see, the Roadrunners are in dire need of a healthy quarterback with game experience to lead the team.
UTSA Quarterbacks
The current quarterback situation at UTSA is dismal at best. Their ace, Frank Harris left early in the season due to another injury. Their backup Lowell Narcisse showed promise, however, he was not able to lead the team in the right direction. Jordan Weeks has seen minimal reps in the last two years. He has only been used in the dying minutes of the game or when the second-stringer is performing poorly.
Narcisse was the teams leading passer with only 1,226 yards, eight touchdowns, and five interceptions. Frank Harris was behind him with only 486 passing yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions. The final quarterback who saw a start in 2019 was Jordan Weeks. He passed for 451 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions. The team was deficient in having a solid, reliable quarterback all season.
Why This Transfer Is Good For The Roadrunners
While many people would view Adkins as a strange signing considering his inconsistencies in the past, this transfer is great for quarterback competition. Frank Harris is once again the front runner for the starting job. However, the addition of another division one talent will be great competition to compare Harris to. This off-season will answer many questions regarding the quarterback position, however, only time will tell if this Roadrunners squad will be able to do something with their current roster.
