Believe it or not, we have reached the quarter-point in the season. Luckily, for the Heisman Trophy candidates not named Tua Tagovailoa and Jalen Hurts this is a marathon and not a sprint. Both Hurts and Tagovailoa are trading punches like a heavyweight title fight. Let’s see who made else made the undercard in our week five 2019 Heisman rankings.
We have settled into a consistent top five at this point in the season. Only Sam Ehlinger, Devonta Smith, Travis Etienne, and Trevor Lawrence received votes this week aside from last week’s top five. Now, let’s see how close our one and two are and look at the breakdown of our top five in our week five 2019 Heisman rankings.

Top Five Candidates
QB | Alabama Next Game: 10/12 at Texas A&M
The video game numbers continue for Tagovailoa. This time, he accounted for seven total touchdowns for the Crimson Tide in their 59-31 victory over Ole Miss. It seems like Nick Saban will be putting him in position with a heavy pass gameplan to get the Heisman this season. Alabama has a bye week before traveling to College Station to take on Texas A&M.

QB | Oklahoma Next Game: 10/05 at Kansas
Hurts lands in the second spot by one point this week. However, Hurts had 485 yards of total offense as the Sooners cruised to a 55-16 win over Texas Tech. Ironically, the improved defense from Oklahoma so far this season could be impacting Hurts as he has not played much into the fourth quarter this season. Look for more of the same as the Sooners play Kansas this weekend.

QB | Ohio State Next Game: 10/05 vs Michigan State
Fields and the rest of the Buckeyes were impressive in dismantling Nebraska over the weekend. So much so that it catapulted Fields into the third spot in our poll. Fields has been everything that we thought he might be in his first year as a starter. He will face his toughest defensive test as Michigan State comes calling this weekend.

QB | LSU Next Game: 10/05 vs Utah State
Burrow was victimized by the bye week. But, it’s typically what happens with the Heisman poll is if you are off for a week other contenders slide up the rankings. Although the Tigers should win comfortably, Utah State will score some points against LSU on Saturday so don’t expect less than a 400-yard performance on Saturday.

RB | Wisconsin Next Game: 10/05 vs Kent State
Taylor drops back a spot to number five this week after just an average performance against Northwestern. It’s hard to call 119 yards and a touchdown average, but by Taylor’s own expectations it was just that. The Badgers look to get back to their dominant play as they host Kent State in Madison.
