Central Michigan has hired Jim McElwain as their new head coach.

The news broke Sunday morning just over a week after Central Michigan fired John Bonamego following the Chippewas’ 1-11 2018 campaign.

McElwain served as head coach for Colorado State from 2012-2014 and the Florida Gators from 2015-2017. He has a 44-28 record as head coach.

He previously served as offensive coordinator under Nick Saban at Alabama and most recently he was the wide receivers coach under Jim Harbaugh at Michigan.

Colorado State

McElwain’s time at Colorado State saw steady improvement over his three year tenure. In his final season for the Rams, the team broke into the top 25 national rankings. The Rams had ten wins (two against Power 5 teams) and averaged almost 500 yards of offense per game. He was the Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year in 2014.

Florida

McElwain’s time at Florida, however, wasn’t as successful. Even though McElwain’s Gators team won two consecutive SEC East titles, the coach never really won over the fan base or the administration. McElwain and the school mutually agreed to part was late in the 2017 season after the school threatened to fire him without cause for reportedly making false accusations of death threats directed his way.

Central Michigan plans to hold a press conference on Monday at 11 a.m. ET to introduce McElwain as head coach.
