Nothing is ever how it seems to be. As in life, this is also a good lesson for preseason Heisman Trophy contenders. For instance, Khalil Tate is a prime example of that. He was a consensus top-five pick and after a slow start to the season he is completely absent from our list.
Our biggest mover is Tua Tagovailoa. He has catapulted from number seven in our initial rankings to being in the top three now. Familiar names and programs complete our top five this week. Now, let’s get started with our Week two Heisman rankings.

Top Five Candidates
QB | West Virginia Next Game: 9/22 vs Kansas State
Grier came into the season as one of the favorites for the Heisman trophy and has not disappointed early on. West Virginia looks capable of challenging the Sooners in the Big 12 this season in large parts to Grier and his weapons on offense. However, Grier caught a tough break this weekend with the game against North Carolina State getting canceled. The Mountaineers begin Big 12 play on September 22nd when they host Kansas State.

RB | Wisconsin Next Game: 9/15 vs BYU
Taylor notched his career high with 253 yards rushing against New Mexico last week. After fumbling the first week and being benched in the second half against Western Kentucky, Taylor bounced back in a big way. Expect more of the same this week against BYU as the Badgers bolster a huge edge on the offensive line.

QB | Alabama Next Game: 9/15 at Ole Miss
Tagovailoa has turned a quarterback controversy into a Heisman Trophy candidate. He hasn’t missed a beat from his heroic national championship form from last year. Even though the Tide head into SEC play, there shouldn’t be much of a challenge on defense. Ole Miss has been woeful on defense early in the season. Expect the big numbers to continue for Tagovailoa this week.

RB | Stanford Next Game: 9/15 vs UC-Davis
Love’s 2018 season has not gotten off to the start that he would have liked. But, after struggling in Stanford’s first game he bounced back with 136 yards and a score against USC. But, it has been announced that Love will miss this weeks game against UC-Davis due to an undisclosed injury. While this is a blow in terms of building statistics for the year, in the grand scheme of the season it should not impact his candidacy.

QB | Oklahoma Next Game: 9/15 at Iowa State
Now, the Sooners are no stranger to this list. But, even the biggest supporters of Kyler Murray would have been surprised to see him in the top five this early. Murray has performed brilliantly early on in replacing Baker Mayfield. Oklahoma has scored 112 points in the first two games of the year in blowout victories over Florida Atlantic and UCLA. Now, Murray faces his toughest test of the season as Oklahoma faces Iowa State. The Cyclones have a solid defense and this will be Murray’s first road start.
