Week 10 in College Football
From the highest-scoring Bedlam ever to the Big Ten’s possible elimination from the Playoff, it was an action-packed Saturday. In case you missed anything, we’ll wrap it up for you. Here’s what happened in week 10 in college football:
Missouri 45, Florida 16
Just when you thought the Gators’ season couldn’t get any worse, it did. This was the Tigers’ fourth win of the season. Their previous three were against Missouri State, Idaho, and Connecticut. Mizzou’s pass defense is still very suspect- Florida’s quarterbacks combined for 256 yards, one TD, and one pick- but they held the Gators under 100 yards rushing.
Oklahoma 62, Oklahoma State 52
The 2017 edition of Bedlam was what you might call an instant classic. The Sooners racked up 785 yards of offense and eight touchdowns to the Cowboys 661 yards and seven TDs. Given some of the underwhelming performances by a couple of Big Ten guys yesterday, is Baker Mayfield for the Heisman becoming a smarter bet?
ESPN’s College Game Day was in Stillwater for this game, and there were some very funny signs in the crowd. My personal favorite, presumably from a Sooner fan, was “Even Santa Isn’t Picking Rudolph To Win”. Honorable Mention goes to “Mom I Dropped Out Last Month”.
Michigan State 27, Penn State 24
So the Big Ten is now officially in chaos, as well as in danger of missing the Playoff entirely. Sparty and the Buckeyes sit tied atop the Big Ten West with 7-2 overall records and 5-1 in conference. Penn State and Michigan are on their heels, also with 7-2 records but with two conference losses. Eventually, a two-loss conference champion will probably make the Playoff. Could it be this year? The situation bears watching.
As for the game itself, Penn State QB Trace McSorley has seen better games. He threw for 381 yards and three TDs, but he also threw three interceptions, while Michigan State sophomore Brian Lewerke had a 400-yard passing game. Interestingly, neither team could get the run game going. Saquon Barkley was held to 63 yards on 14 carries, and L.J. Scott didn’t fare any better. Neither team hit the 100-yard mark on the ground.
Army 21, Air Force 0
Army quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw (as a Giants fan, I always do a double take when I see that) rushed for 265 yards on 23 carries in the victory. He did not attempt a pass.
All you diva wide receivers out there who just want the damn ball- it could be worse.
Surprise of the Week
Iowa 55, Ohio State 24 Wow. What else is there to say? The last time the Buckeyes looked that bad was… when? Even the season after the tattoo scandal, when the team went 6-7, they didn’t suffer anything close to this type of beatdown. Iowa has looked good this season, but we would never have guessed they were capable of what they did yesterday. This is a team that only beat Minnesota by a touchdown last week.
So that was week 10 in college football. With just a few weeks to go, things are really starting to heat up with regard to the College Football Playoff. Remember to look for the LWOS Top 25 later today, and have a great week!
