2016 College Football Seniors: Thank You

Thank You

A Note of Thanks

As the college football regular season ends and conference championship play prepares to get underway there is one thing that college football fans across the country need to stop and do.  Stop and say thank you to the players for their favorite teams.  The conclusion of the college football season means seniors days occurring across the country at all levels of football.

Not every season goes as expected, there are unmet team and individual goals, 18-22 year olds are criticized by adults on a weekly to daily basis and they own the blames and failures like the respectful men that we hope they will go on to be in whatever endeavors they choose to pursue. They might have to answer public questions about their ability, but their effort should never be questioned.  So in this article we’ll say thank you to all of the college football players who may have just played their last game ever.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.

A Week of Work

Each week fans pack stadiums and sit glued in front of the TV to watch you do something that you love.  The results are never as any of us had hoped but that’s life.  You gave your all to your teammates, family, fans and university.  For four to five years you completely poured yourself into one singular focus, again we say thank you.  You balanced the difficult demands of being a student-athlete, a son, brother, uncle and any other role you might be filling.  And you did so to the best of your abilities, your effort will never be questioned, thank you.  You come from all different walks of life, from coast to coast, north to south, some from foreign countries and you played your hearts out.

Expectations may or may have been met from when you first stepped on campus. But I can sure you whether you played 0 snaps or 10,000 snaps over the course of your career, your career was anything but a bust or a disappointment.  It doesn’t matter if you were a five-star recruit that was billed as the next NFL super star or a recruited walk on hoping to make it into the 105-man roster for training camp, college football fans are forever grateful for you and say thank you to you.  As the seasons end draws near, and you prepare to play potentially your last game, please know that what you did was truly special and to cherish those final moments.  And while fans may not always show it, they are deeply thankful for the time you spent at your university.

Sam Foltz

Unfortunately, you were taken from us far too soon.  Your brothers at Nebraska represented your life with the utmost class. Every team played paid homage to you and the man that you are.  I’m sorry that you didn’t go get go through your own senior day, or so many of life’s other blessings.  However, I wanted you to have your moment here.

Sam Foltz, thank you for everything you did for the University of Nebraska and everyone that you crossed paths with.

A Message to the Fans

Embrace the end of the season and these players have done. What may seem like a disappointing to some fans is a success to those players. What may seem like a success to the fans is a disappoint to the players.  Every team and every player dreams of making it to the College Football Playoffs. The reality is that only four can go.  Not going to the playoffs doesn’t take away from the significance of what was accomplished by your favorite team this season.

On Sunday afternoon, the bowl selections will be announced, surely there will be fans who are disappointed.  That’s okay, it happens.  Don’t voice your disappointment, or boycott a bowl game because of it.  Those players that you spend hours cheering for on Saturdays in the fall have been working hours upon hours since last winter for this opportunity.  Let them have this moment.  After all, it will be the last time some of them ever play a game they so deeply love again.  If you were going to lose something that you greatly loved, wouldn’t you want to have the final moments and days to enjoy it?
