2017 NFL Draft
As we enter the second half of the NFL season, the clear choice for the number one pick is the Cleveland Browns. With an 0-10 record, odds are they’ll be picking first in April. Entering the 2017 season, the Browns will need a quarterback and they may not need to look any further than an Ohio native.
As if there was speculation about the Browns interest in Mitch Trusbisky, they were in Chapel Hill to witness his 184 yard, three touchdown performance on just 20 pass attempts.
Mitch Trubisky
Trubisky, the University of North Carolina quarterback and ACC leader in completion percentage and, has been considered by multiple scouts to be the No. 1 quarterback in the 2017 draft class. While leading the Tarheels to an 8-3 record and a shot at winning the ACC Coastal Division, Trubisky has turned some heads along the way. He’s thrown for 3,188 yards and 25 touchdowns with just four interceptions. He’s currently 5th in FBS in completion percentage and ninth in total QBR.
Unlike most college quarterbacks who attend a program and transfer if they’re not QB1 on the depth chart, Trubisky stayed patient after redshirting and sitting behind quarterback Marquise Williams. Prior to the 2016 season, he had thrown for 1,014 yards and 11 touchdowns with a 66 percent completion percentage.
Coming out of Mentor, Ohio, Mitch Trubisky was named Mr. Football in the state of Ohio and held offers from other schools that included Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan State, and Tennessee. He was ranked 219 in the ESPN 300 and the number seven dual-threat quarterback recruit in the nation by ESPN.
Coming into the 2016 season as the starting quarterback, Trubisky had big shoes to fill with the departure of Williams. He’s filled them and more as he’s been one of the best quarterbacks in the nation. He is currently top ten in the nation among in completions, completion percentage, passing yards, and interceptions thrown.
Trubisky’s Future
Trubisky will suit up in a North Carolina uniform for at least two more games and regardless, will finish with one of the best seasons by a UNC quarterback in history. He needs just 231 passing yards over his final two games of the season to set the single-season record by a North Carolina quarterback and only four touchdowns to set the single-season record. He currently ranks top 10 in career passing yards and touchdowns for the Tarheels.
As for the Cleveland Browns, Trubisky may be the answer to their quarterback woes. Clemson’s Deshaun Watson is considered to be the No. 2 quarterback prospect entering the draft and could be the No. 1 overall pick. However, if both Trubisky and Watson decide to return to school the Browns could consider taking their pick in a different direction. Trubisky will be an NFL quarterback regardless of whether he’s selected in the 2017 or 2018 draft and as the potential to be a starter in the league. The real question aside from when he will enter the draft is what team will Trubisky end up on? If the Browns were to be willing to use the No. 1 overall pick on him, it would be a dream come true.
