After being dominated on both sides of the ball last week, the Virginia Tech Hokies opened their ACC schedule against the Boston College on Saturday. The Eagles who haven’t won an ACC game in over a year. Virginia Tech looked like a completely different team this weekend as the Hokies shut down Boston College. The Eagles? Well, they looked pretty much the same.
SCOT LOEFFLER RETURNS TO BLACKSBURG
Scot Loeffler returned to Blacksburg on Saturday, but this time as a opposing coach. After spending three years with Virginia Tech Loeffler was named the new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Eagles in January of this year. But Bud Foster’s defense wanted nothing to do with a happy reunion.
Loeffler’s offense in the first half was sluggish. The Hokies defense held the Eagles to only 92 total yards of offense with 62 coming on the ground and 30 through the air.
The biggest question coming into the game centered around whether the Hokies could win the turnover battle. The resounding answer was Yes. In the first half Virginia Tech forced the Eagles in to one turnover on the ground and one more through the air. Meanwhile, the Hokies had no turnovers in the first half.
JEROD EVANS SHOWING WHY HE IS A TOP QUARTERBACK
Jerod Evans had three touchdown passes in the first half. One in particular came late in the first half when he found Isaiah Ford in the back of the end zone double covered. There were a few times Evans dropped back and would either overthrow or underthrow his receivers.
For instance, in the second quarter Evans threw one up to Bucky Hodges streaking up the field but a slightly overthrown ball made Hodges reach out for it allowing it to slide right off his fingers.
Other than that one pass in the first half, Evans was on fire throwing a total of 23 times completing 16 passes (69.5%) for 253 yards averaging 11 yards per pass.
HOKIES STAY HOT IN SECOND HALF
Leading off the second half Boston College got the ball but the Hokies defense forced a three and out. Evans came out and pounded the ball both through the air and ground. With just under 12 minutes left in the third quarter, Evans threw his fourth touchdown pass to tight end Chris Cunningham to extend the Hokies lead to 28-0.
With 30 plays from the Hokies being in Boston College territory, a flat route got Sam Rogers wide open and Evans found him for his fifth touchdown pass of the game.
Heading late into the third a touchdown run by Trayvon McMillian put the Hokies up 42-0.
Virginia Tech’s back-ups finished the game. There were some positive plays from the second string guys.
Marshawn Williams broke a couple tackles in the defensive secondary to help lead the offensive load with 15 carries for 81 yards.
Brendan Motley, Evans backup took a designed draw play right up the teeth of the Eagles defense for a 26 yard touchdown run extending the Hokies lead to 49-0.
HOKIES SHUT DOWN BOSTON COLLEGE
On a beautiful evening for football in Blacksburg the main key to the game for the Hokies was to hold on to the ball.
“We want to execute and hold on to the football. That’s what we have to do in order to win,” Fuente said.
It’s easy to say that the Hokies executed their game plan. The only negative that will be on the film for the Hokies is the Evans-to-Ford pass that went through Ford’s hands for a Boston College interception.
The 49 points scored against the Eagles was the first time Boston College allowed 49 or more points since 2012 when they gave up 51 to Florida State.
Virginia Tech just didn’t defeat the Eagles. They dominated the Eagles on every aspect of football.

The next matchup for the Hokies will see a very good East Carolina Pirates football team enter Blacksburg. Virginia Tech leads the series against the Pirates, 13-7, but the last two games went to East Carolina as the Pirates defeated the Hokies 28-21 in 2014 and 35-28 last season.
