Of that, there is no doubt. It must be said to get it out of the way. He is certainly very talented, possessing an all-court, aggressive style and a myriad of shots at his disposal. His game, when free-flowing, is certainly capable of causing any player on the tour a host of problems. Ever since he broke onto the scene as a young lad from Denmark, it has always been obvious that his talents and his unmistakable confidence in himself have also been on full display.

His burgeoning confidence is perhaps what propelled him to the top of the game in quick time. However, lately it has become just that, confidence without the results to show for it. Depending on whom you ask, some will call that arrogance. Yet it hasn’t stopped the young Dane from telling anyone who cares to listen how he sees himself and what he brings to the table.

He was doing just that again this week when speaking in an interview with Tales from Tennis. The 22-year-old, when discussing the dominance of Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, described it as boring and added that he believes he can challenge them more consistently. For most tennis enthusiasts and fans, his comments are not without merit, as he has previously demonstrated that he has what it takes to match the two trailblazers. After all, his head-to-head against the pair reads 2-3 vs Sinner and 2-2 vs Alcaraz, suggesting his claims are not without merit.

Speaking on his matches against the pair, he said of his playing style, “It gives me the belief that I know I can do it, and every time I step [on court] against them, I know I have a chance to beat them. And I know that both of them find it uncomfortable to play me, so that’s extra motivation for me”

The Unmistakable Chasm

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBn0NvZe3J" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2994px; aspect-ratio: 2994/1996;" ></smartframe-embed>

However, the reality is that while the individual match-ups feel close, there is no doubt that a significant gap exists in where their respective careers are at the moment. As far back as 2022, it was Rune who was again stoking the fires of a potential rivalry with Alcaraz. At the time, Alcaraz was already a two-time Grand Slam winner, and has since gone on to win five more. Sinner, on the other hand, had not won a single Grand Slam at the time. He now has four.

It is now 2026, yet Rune continues to talk about dreams of joining the party. A party that, going by his own sentiments, he was supposed to be the second guest. It represents a damning indictment of how little he has lived up to his own expectations.

While it is true that his time on court has been hindered by injuries -with the latest being an Achilles tendon rupture that has kept him out of action since October last year- the problem is that when he’s been available, he’s done very little to back up what he continues to tell everyone who cares to listen.

Before his injury, some of his results last year tell a familiar tale. Against players ranked in the top 10, he won two of his three matches, including an impressive win against Alcaraz in the Barcelona final in straight sets. Stats like this make his arguments plausible. However, in the same year, he went 0-4 against players outside the ATP top 100, losing to the likes of Nicholas Jarry, Jan Lennard Struff, Terence Atmane and Valentin Vacherot.

The Mitigating Flaws

This is where the fundamental problem with Rune lies. He is just as likely to beat the world #1 as he is to lose to the world #140 player. A player capable of sweeping the floor with the very best players, but at the same time, lacking the focus and professionalism required to dispatch lesser opposition. It is a trait that suggests he will never live up to the hype he so willingly heaps on himself. He even admitted that his team had to call out his perceived lackadaisical approach in Tokyo last year, which suggests he is fully aware of the problems plaguing him. Unfortunately, it is almost as if he is comfortable with the knowledge that he can cause the very best issues, regardless of whether they translate into actual trophies.

There is also the subject of his physical conditioning. Even before the Achilles rupture, there were questions about his endurance in long five-setters compared to the elite physical conditioning of Sinner and Alcaraz. The Same has not shown, up to this point, the physical durability needed to win a Grand Slam. There is no doubt that being able to match those two in matches is commendable, but if you are to be compared to them, you must also win the Majors; otherwise, it all becomes academic. This is even more crucial, when you factor in that his style, relies heavily on twitchy, explosive movement, meaning he must be in top-notch condition for the results to follow.

He is now slated for a return during the grass court swing, although the tail-end of the clay season remains a flickering possibility. It now remains to be seen if he can finally start delivering. There’s no doubt that there would be a host of people within and around the sports who hope he can finally come through on his undoubted quality and will be more than happy to have someone challenge the top two. But at 22, he is no longer a prodigy, and it’s time to start making good on all that promise. His best shots now have to be taken on the courts and not in interview rooms.

He must now take a leaf from the books of the men whose dominance he seeks to end and let his work on court speak for itself. Everyone loves that guy who talks the talk and walks the walk, but right now, Holger Rune is doing all the talking off the court. He needs to start talking on it!

Main Photo Credit: Susan Mullane-Imagn Images

Holger Rune is a very fine tennis player.
