Giron notched an advantage, but that was where Fritz pulled out the magic.

After pushing Giron across the baseline with heavy groundstrokes into the corners, Fritz scooped a drop shot over the net. Giron managed to chase it down, and the net cord popped it up behind Fritz.

With quick reflexes, Fritz flicked his racket behind his back and tapped the ball over the net in a pseudo-lob that Giron had no chance of reaching.

Fritz, who had been laser-focused all night, raised his fist and grinned as the crowd cheered him on. And though he didn’t end up breaking Giron’s serve in that game, he later broke for the set and went on to win the match. But no other point came close to Fritz’s electric behind-the-back shot, the highlight of the night.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBsyKcd85b" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3508px; aspect-ratio: 3508/2480;" ></smartframe-embed>

TennisTV called it the “shot of the year so far.” Honestly, we’re inclined to agree.
