In his first match since last August, he earned Great Britain’s first point in a 4-0 win in under an hour. After a positive showing, he will look to build on this and work his way back up to the level that he showed last season.

An Excellent Australian Open

The 2026 Australian Open was truly a Slam to remember. You can be in danger of saying that about every Grand Slam, and well, funnily enough, when 128 of the best males and females around the world turn up, they tend to produce good tennis.

Make no mistake, it was a slow burner. In a bid to find headlines in the opening week, we turned to Coco Gauff smashing a racket and Naomi Osaka and Sorana Cirstea’s on-court needle.

However, as the Happy Slam developed, so too did the storylines. On the women’s side, 18-year-old Iva Jovic added to the production of American talent, making a run to the quarter-finals without losing a set, before falling to world #1 Aryna Sabalenka. The Belarusian would meet Elena Rybakina in a rematch of the 2023 final, before losing an epic three-set battle 6-4 4-6 6-4.

On the men’s side, Learner Tien knocked Daniil Medvedev out for the second week running and reached his first Grand Slam quarter-final. He would lose to former Olympic gold medallist and twice ATP Finals Champion Alexander Zverev. Two days later, the German lost to Carlos Alcaraz in an all-time semi-final 6-4 7-6 6-7 6-7 7-5.

Yet, that would only be the second best match of the day as Novak Djokovic later rolled back the years to beat defending champion Jannik Sinner 3-6 6-3 4-6 6-4 6-4. Two days later, with history on the line, Carlos Alcaraz stopped the Serb’s attempt at a quarter-century Grand Slam total and in doing so, became the youngest ever Career Grand Slam winner. Defend his title next year and he’ll join Djokovic and Rafael Nadal as men in the Open Era to win the double Career Slam.

The Tennis World Rolls On

Nevertheless, with the adrenaline and quality of the opening slam coming to a close, the subsequent period can feel a little dull at times. Lower-end ranking events, which those who have excelled in the Australian Open skip, don’t attract the same eyeballs. Your attention to them in some ways can be the equivalent of a tennis-fan loyalty test. Just how hardcore are you?

Yet, there are storylines aplenty as always in the tennis world. With a focus on team tennis, after a disappointing 2025, Great Britain started their Davis Cup qualifiers brightly with a dominant 4-0 win over Norway.

Absence Through Injury

All eyes were on Jack Draper’s return after a five-month absence due to an upper arm injury. Making his debut five years ago in Miami, fitness issues have always plagued him. In the sustained periods of good health, he has shown incredible promise. None more so than last year, when it was finally seeming to come together. An excellent first half of the season, including a BNP Paribas Open title and a Madrid Open runners-up place, propelled him to world #4. Yet, since an US Open opening round victory against Federico Agustin Gomez, it’s been yet more time spent on the treatment table.

He told the Independent how he has taken this time away as a mental break from the sport,

“I had to maybe take a step back and not be so intense with it. I think that’s helped me off the court and to keep on improving on the court as well, because tennis is a bubble and sometimes you can get kind of distracted, and that it’s all that matters in life. Whereas when you have this kind of injury, you have time out and I used it wisely, I think, to try and make sure that when I come back to tennis and my arm is OK, that I’m ready to go all the way again.”

He returned to court against Viktor Durasovic in Oslo to open up Great Britain’s qualifying battle against Norway. The 28-year-old was called up on short notice after Casper Ruud withdrew to spend time with his newly born son. Durasovic is currently ranked at 313 with a career high of 222 and has won just two matches this season, both at Challenger level. One came against Benoit Paire, who is now ranked as low as 917 and the other against Italy’s Alexandr Binda at #425.

A Dominant Display

Therefore, it was hardly a surprise when Draper took the early break in the third game. The backhand exchanges gave him the edge early on, with a particularly impressive down-the-line passing shot to lead 30-0. This put more pressure on Durasovic’s attacking forehand shots, as it was so vital for him to gain the upper hand early on. Any time Draper could establish the upper hand in the rally and play to the backhand, it was hard to see him losing.

Feeling the need to go bigger than his normal level, the Norwegian lacked the consistency and gave away a few too many errors at important points. None more so than at 3-1 down and 15-40. The previous point provided a marathon rally. Draper ultimately took the initiative earlier and approached the net and volleyed away easily. After this though, the Norwegian threw in a costly double fault and from that point on, it was a long road back.

The second set was more of the same, with one-way traffic. Draper’s passing shots continued to impress of both wings, although Durasovic’s approach shots lacked the necessary width or speed to trouble.

Comeback Caution

An overall important win. However, it’s hard to really read into the dominant score line due to the relative level of competition. Draped soon after pulled out of ATP Rotterdam, say that it was too early to play back-to-back weeks even if he remains in a positive headspace,

“I definitely have to be wary of how the injury is progressing. I wouldn’t be back playing again if me and my team weren’t really confident that I can start to build back on the tour again.”

After so many similar stories, such caution is understandable. You just hope he can find that period of full fitness, as he is a top 5 player at his peak. Either way, next up is the ATP Qatar Open, where he has points to defend after reaching the final last season.

Main photo credit: Danielle Parhizkaran-USA TODAY Sports

Jack Draper returned to tennis with a 6-2 6-2 win over Norway’s Viktor Durasovic.
