All eight remaining players are seeded, and seven of them are part of the current Top 10 in the world. With a field this stacked, including multiple former Australian Open champions and players chasing all kinds of historical landmarks, here is a re-ranking of how each player stands entering the quarterfinals.

Australian Open Quarterfinal Re-Rank

8: Learner Tien

While the young American has done incredibly well to reach this stage after once being two sets to one down in the first round, it is quite likely that this is the end of the road for him, as he now faces Alexander Zverev–a player who is 29–1 in his last 30 matches against left-handed opponents. But regardless of what happens next, the performance Tien produced against Daniil Medvedev in the fourth round has not only announced him, it has ensured he is one of the up-and-coming players on tour to watch closely.

7: Alex de Minaur

The No.1 ranked Australian for several years now, Alex de Minaur has once again found himself in the last eight of his home Slam–something he has also achieved at other Majors. However, he is yet to take the next step, and that looks likely to remain the case here as he faces the World No.1 next. De Minaur’s floor is high enough to consistently reach the latter stages thanks to his baseline consistency, but against the very elite, his lack of power and a truly reliable serve often catch up to him — as reflected in his career record against top 10 players.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBFspRJgFB" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3508px; aspect-ratio: 3508/2480;" ></smartframe-embed>

6: Lorenzo Musetti

The Italian produced a breakout performance on this surface in the fourth round, defeating fellow Top 10 player Taylor Fritz in straight sets. The truth is that Lorenzo Musetti has greatly improved his skill set, particularly his serve and forehand, becoming a more consistent and dangerous player on hard courts. That progress has helped him reach back-to-back hard-court Major quarterfinals, but a potential path of Djokovic–Sinner–Alcaraz ahead is simply too big a task for anyone.

5: Ben Shelton

You could argue that I have Ben Shelton ranked higher than he should be, but I still believe he has the highest upside on this surface, mainly due to his serve, of all the players likely to exit at the quarterfinal stage. That said, against Jannik Sinner, a player who has now beaten him eight consecutive times, the American has more than likely met his match.

4: Alexander Zverev

The World No.3 comes in at No.4 in my re-rankings heading into the quarterfinals. While the German has improved his level progressively throughout the tournament and has a matchup next that he should like on paper, it is also possible that Zverev is a player who has passed his peak and is now regressing, as suggested by his subpar 2025 season. While he should still make the semifinals, anything beyond that feels like a difficult task. Then again, this is a player who reached the final at this very tournament last year.

3: Novak Djokovic

Still the best of the rest, Novak Djokovic slots in at No.3 in the re-rankings at the age of 38. The former World No.1 has played some solid, ultra-aggressive tennis so far in this tournament — something he clearly focused on during the offseason. His biggest advantage, however, is that a walkover in the fourth round has given him four complete days to recharge his batteries ahead of the business end of the tournament. That should help him more than any other player, given his age. Still, a potential semifinal against Jannik Sinner feels like Mount Everest to climb for the 10-time champion at Melbourne Park.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBcm96iaKD" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3240px; aspect-ratio: 3240/2160;" ></smartframe-embed>

2: Jannik Sinner

The two-time defending champion was a sure bet to be No.1 in my re-rankings until at least the final round, but his physical blip once again in the third round, combined with how the World No.1 is playing, drops Sinner one spot. Still, the Italian remains the player to beat on hard courts. Given his potential quarterfinal and semifinal opponents, two matchups he historically enjoys but that will challenge him, he should still enter the final as the favourite, especially in conditions that might actually be his favourite on tour.

1: Carlos Alcaraz

New year, new coaching team, same old Carlos Alcaraz. The World No.1 sits atop the pre-quarterfinal re-rankings for three reasons:

Jannik Sinner had a close call in one of his matches.

Alcaraz produced his best performance of the tournament in the fourth round.

Alcaraz has been the best player on tour for around seven months now, and there is no reason to overthink that.

All of this gives me enough confidence, as things stand, to place Alcaraz ahead of a two-time defending champion, something I usually do not feel comfortable doing.

Main Photo Credit: Mike Frey-Imagn Images

And then there were eight.
