Day seven delivered a host of compelling storylines, with a two-time defending champion on the ropes, an all-time great of the sport making even more history, and an icon of the game bidding farewell to Melbourne.

Australian Open Day 7 Men’s Recap

The day started an hour earlier than usual due to extreme weather conditions in the forecast, and that only added to the drama and tension, especially during the day-session matches.

Who Looked Good

The day began with an upset, as Luciano Darderi defeated Karen Khachanov rather comfortably to reach the second week of a hard-court Slam for the first time in his career. Remarkably, this is also the first time Darderi has ever won three consecutive matches on hard courts at any level. The Italian played solid baseline tennis, taking more initiative than usual, which was reflected in an impressive 78 percent of points won behind his first serve.

Top-ranked American Ben Shelton also enjoyed a positive outing against Shanghai hero Valentin Vacherot, winning comfortably in straight sets. Shelton had an exceptional serving day, facing just one break point and getting broken zero times. He won 75 percent of his total service points and struck nearly 50 winners en route to yet another Major second-week appearance.

And then there was Novak Djokovic, who seems to set a new record every time he steps on court. The former World No.1 not only reached a record-breaking 70th career Slam fourth round, but also became the only man in tennis history to reach 400 match wins at the four Majors, with no one even remotely close to that mark. He will face Jakub Mensik in the next round, who also impressed today with a straight-sets win of his own. That matchup promises to be one of the standout contests of the fourth round.

Farewell to an Icon

Day seven also marked the end of the road in Melbourne for a former champion, as Stan Wawrinka lost a hard-fought four-set match against Taylor Fritz. While he showed flashes of inspiring tennis in this match and throughout the tournament, it ultimately brought an end to his final Australian Open campaign at the venue where he captured his first Major title back in 2014, with the Swiss having already confirmed that this will be his last year on tour.

While Wawrinka’s farewell was official, it is also quite possible that we have seen the last of Marin Cilic at the Australian Open. The 2018 finalist in Melbourne was defeated in four sets by Casper Ruud, which may well prove to be his final appearance at the tournament.

Who Looked Vulnerable

Although he ultimately won the match, Jannik Sinner came closer to defeat at the Australian Open than at any point since his 2024 final, where he trailed by two sets. Some may argue that the Italian was fortunate with the timing of the heat rule being implemented, but the rule exists to protect players, and on this occasion, Sinner was the beneficiary.

Even so, the Italian will want to manage these physical issues better going forward, particularly as they have affected him more than other top players. He enters the second week still four wins away from a historic three-peat in Melbourne.

Who Looked Bad

Although his opponent arguably played the match of his life on a hard court, Karen Khachanov will be disappointed with this loss. He entered the contest as the favourite and, although he showed patches of solid tennis, the opportunity for a second-week appearance was there. He simply wasn’t efficient enough on serve or consistent enough from the baseline when it mattered most.

While the organisers did well to promptly implement the heat rule when the index reached 5.0, one can still question whether it might have been better to begin the day with the roofs closed on the main courts, avoiding players being pushed toward exhaustion in the first place.

Match of the Day

The match of the day was easily the five-set classic between Lorenzo Musetti and Tomas Machac, which has also arguably been the match of the tournament so far.

Both players showcased exceptional baseline quality while also using every bit of variety and court craft in their arsenal. Rallies frequently ended either at the net or after multiple exchanges of slice, making for captivating viewing throughout.

In total, the two combined for over 100 winners and won more than 50 percent of points on each other’s second serve, highlighting just how crucial aggression was in this encounter. Both players also approached the net more than 30 times each.

In the end, it was Musetti who came through, despite narrowly losing the first set. The win marks his first-ever Australian Open fourth-round appearance and signals an impressive start to his new chapter as a top-five player on tour.

Main photo credit: Mike Frey-Imagn Images

And so, the first week of this year’s Australian Open is in the books, as what was once a 128-player draw has now been reduced to the final 16.
