Stan Wawrinka and Marin Cilic each produced some of their top tennis to push into the third round, while top seeds like Jannik Sinner, Novak Djokovic, and Lorenzo Musetti all cruised. LWOT breaks down some of the tennis in Melbourne Park.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Australian Open Day 5 Men\u2019s Recap<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Who Looked Good<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>No Top 10 seeds dropped a set on Thursday, meaning that nine of the 10 top seeds remain in the third round. By the start of the third round of last year&#8217;s Australian Open, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/tennis\/australian-open\/bracket\/_\/season\/2025\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">four seeds had crashed out of the tournament<\/a>. World No. 2 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/2025\/12\/22\/jannik-sinner-in-2025-titles-and-time-off\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Jannik Sinner<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>was arguably the most impressive of the top players, winning 6-1 6-4 6-2 and only facing three break points against Aussie James Duckworth. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/2025\/11\/10\/novak-djokovic-2025-season-recap\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Novak Djokovic<\/strong><\/a> cruised in straight sets during his Rod Laver Arena day session match.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile,\u00a0<strong>Ben Shelton<\/strong>, defending semifinalist points <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/2025\/12\/24\/ben-shelton-2025-season-review-onwards-and-upwards-for-the-american\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">and facing an important season<\/a>, cruised 6-3 6-2 6-2 over another Aussie, Dane Sweeny.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/2025\/12\/27\/lorenzo-musetti-2025-season-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><strong>Lorenzo Musetti<\/strong><\/a> was the fourth Top 8 seed to cruise into the third round, defeating Lorenzo Sonego.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBhVVeLKAc\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3508px; aspect-ratio: 3508\/2480;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p>The top seeds have been so dominant thus far on the big show courts, that after five days of tennis, only two of the 10 men&#8217;s matches in Rod Laver Arena were not completed in straight sets&#8211;each featured Top 10 players winning.<\/p>\n<p>Unseeded players displayed some vintage tennis on Thursday.\u00a0<strong>Marin Cilic,\u00a0<\/strong>reached the third round of the Australian Open for the first time since 2022, crushing seeded player Denis Shapovalov in straight sets. Cilic, in his opening round match, had before produced a rare double bagel in eventually a 6-0 6-0 7-6 (3) win. Cilic&#8217;s most recent Grand Slam final appearance was at the 2018 Australian Open.<\/p>\n<p>And then there was\u00a0<strong>Stan Wawrinka<\/strong>,\u00a0who at 40 years old, won the longest match of the tournament <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/2026\/01\/22\/vintage-stan-wawrinka-battles-into-australian-open-third-round\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">in a five-set lung-buster against Arthur Gea<\/a>. More details on that match below.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Who Looked Bad<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>After <strong>Stefanos Tsitsipas\u00a0<\/strong>lost to <strong>Tomas Machac\u00a0<\/strong>in a four-set tussle, it means that the Greek has now gone seven Grand Slams in a row without reaching the third round. Tsitsipas had to call the physio during the match, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/2026\/01\/22\/the-end-of-tsitsipas-australian-open-sanctuary\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">as he faced untimely injuries<\/a>\u00a0throughout the previous 2025 season.<\/p>\n<p>Machac, who produced clutch tennis in consecutive tiebreaks, will now go up against his third one-handed backhand foe by facing Musetti.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>The player whose fate came at the hands of Musetti, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonego, did not play his best against a friendly rival and doubles partner. Sonego&#8217;s ranking <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will drop out at least 20 spots to around the No. 60 mark.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was a rough day for <strong>Hubert Hurkacz<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/2026\/01\/11\/biggest-movers-in-the-atp-top-100-blockx\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">who played fantastic tennis at the United Cup earlier<\/a> in January. The Pole could only hit nine aces off his usually-powerful serve, as Hurkacz lost 6-4 7-6 (5) 6-1 to a strong <strong>Ethan Quinn<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Match of the Day<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Wawrinka&#8217;s gotten a lot of spotlight at this year&#8217;s Australian Open due to it being his last. Yet, the Swiss is playing his best tennis at this tournament in six years, when he made the quarterfinals in 2020. The crowd, however, was a huge factor late in the match. Gea had three break point opprtunities to lead in the fifth set, but a pro-Wawrinka fanbase perhaps rattled the younger player.
