On the eve of the Australian Open<\/a>, LWOT breaks down the biggest recent movers in the Top 100 of the WTA Tour rankings. Many players sat out the tour’s second week to prep for the Australian Open, but there were still a few bigger moves after tournaments in Adelaide and Hobart.<\/p>\n

Biggest Movers in the WTA Top 100 This Week \u2013 Week 2<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Tereza Valentova: <\/strong>+7: World No. 60 -> World No. 53<\/em><\/p>\n

Valentova qualified for the main draw of the WTA 500 Adelaide event and advanced to the second round of the tournament after her opening match opponent, Jelena Ostapenko, was forced to retire. The Czech reached a career high ranking by the week’s end. Ultimately, the 18-year-old lost to Madison Keys 6-4 6-1 ahead of her Australian Open debut. She now faces the tough task of playing home-favorite Maya Joint in the first round.<\/p>\n

Elisabetta Cocciaretto:\u00a0<\/strong>+24: World No. 80 -> World No. 56<\/em><\/p>\n

From qualifying to hoisting a second career WTA Tour trophy,\u00a0<\/span>Cocciaretto upset No. 3 seed Iva Jovic to win the Hobart International<\/a>. The Italian, as a result, rose 24 spots in the rankings. She was ranked as high as No. 29 in the summer of 2023. Cocciaretto only dropped one set en route to the WTA 250 title.<\/p>\n

Kimberly Birrell:\u00a0<\/strong>+31: World No. 107 -> World No. 76<\/em><\/p>\n

She didn’t lift a trophy like Cocciaretto, but what a week two it was for Birrell. The Gold Coast, Australia, native is a bit short of her career-high ranking of No. 60, but she made huge strides in the rankings after reaching the Adelaide semifinals. She defeated the higher-ranked Jaqueline Cristian 5-7 6-1 7-5 in the quarterfinals, a win that granted her around 100 ranking points alone. Birrell will face compatriot Maddison Inglis in the Australian Open first round.<\/p>\n
