Who do you think is coming out on top?

WTA Beijing Day 2 Predictions

Zeynep Sonmez vs Sijia Wei

Head-to-head: Sonmez 2-0

Zeynep Sonmez will soon defend that Merida title, and her ranking might suffer significantly as she hasn’t been as good this year. But she still defeated Sijia Wei pretty comfortably when they played each other in Indian Wells qualifying. The Chinese posted a surprise win over Elena-Gabriela Ruse here last year, but typically, she should be finding herself a little out of her depth against players of this quality. Especially since her form has been awful lately.
Prediction: Sonmez in 2

Rebecca Sramkova vs Elena-Gabriela Ruse

Head-to-head: Sramkova 1-0

Elena-Gabriela Ruse hasn’t won a match since reaching the Hertogenbosch final, which is just another interesting twist in the career of the Romanian. She definitely has a lot more quality than she shows on a weekly basis, and you can often see it in all these tight matches she plays against stars at the Slams (but never really wins them). Rebecca Sramkova isn’t exactly red-hot right now, unlike when she was coming to Beijing last year, but she should have a bit more confidence under her belt.
Prediction: Sramkova in 3

Embed from Getty Images

Sonay Kartal vs Alycia Parks

Head-to-head: First meeting

Sonay Kartal was part of Great Britain’s Billie Jean King Cup Finals team last week and did really well, despite losing to Emma Navarro in a tight singles rubber. The Brit should be able to build on that in Beijing as Alycia Parks is still performing with zero consistency outdoors. Sure, she can come onto the court and just smash winner after winner. But more often than not, her game is just a little too wild to beat solid opponents in slower conditions.
Prediction: Kartal in 2

Katerina Siniakova vs Anastasia Potapova

Head-to-head: Siniakova 2-0

They’ve played twice and interestingly, Anastasia Potapova has only taken one game off Katerina Siniakova. However, it has to be mentioned that both matches ended in a second-set retirement. Hopefully, we get a completed affair this time. Siniakova seems like the more likely winner here, coming off a great week in Seoul (semifinals in singles and the title in doubles). Potapova also just hasn’t developed like she was expected to a few years ago and it doesn’t seem like she’s getting closer.
Prediction: Siniakova in 3

Main Photo Credit: Geoff Burke – Imagn Images

With the bottom half opening-round matches out of the way, Thursday at WTA Beijing will feature the top half women’s singles first-round encounters.
