We predict all of them as Sebastian Korda is taking on Adam Walton, while Bu Yunchaokete and Zhizhen Zhang are clashing in a rematch of last year’s semifinal. The latter is finally making his return after six months away from the sport. Who do you think will advance to the next stage of the tournament?

ATP Hangzhou Day 2 Predictions

Valentin Royer vs Aleksandar Kovacevic

Head-to-head: First meeting

Valentin Royer broke the Top 100 this year but is yet to make a big impact on the main tour. The final qualifying round win over Eliot Spizzirri allows him another shot in the Hangzhou main draw and Aleksandar Kovacevic is a winnable draw. While the American was recently in the Los Cabos final, he’s struggled since and conditions in Asia tend to be a little too fast for his liking. Hangzhou could still be in his range, though, and maybe he can neutralize Royer’s aggression at his backhand with the slice.
Prediction: Kovacevic in 3

Rinky Hijikata vs Camilo Ugo Carabelli

Head-to-head: First meeting

Camilo Ugo Carabelli’s ranking has gone up so much this season, giving him a little more space to try tournaments outside his comfort zone. The Argentinian is still a clay-court specialist through and through, even if the 4-6 hard-court record this year doesn’t sound that bad. Rinky Hijikata should try to make sure he doesn’t waste this opportunity as he kind of needs the points right now and just had a solid qualifying campaign.
Prediction: Hijikata in 2

Embed from Getty Images

Yunchaokete Bu vs Zhizhen Zhang

Head-to-head: Zhang 1-0

It was a big story when these two met in the semifinals last year, both achieving career-best results during the Asian swing. A year later it’s been no bed of roses, with Bu Yunchaokete struggling to repeat that form long-term and Zhizhen Zhang coming back from a six-month injury hiatus. While Zhang is still the player with the higher upside, it’s tough not to go with Bu right now as we just have no idea what the former’s status is physically. But travelling back from Davis Cup in Ireland could be a slight issue for the favorite.
Prediction: Bu in 3

Sebastian Korda vs Adam Walton

Head-to-head: First meeting

Not being able to defend his Washington and ATP Masters 1000 Canada achievements from last year cost Sebastian Korda so many ranking points, but his level when healthy is still so much higher than the World No. 79 position he currently holds in the ATP Rankings. Playing Adam Walton requires a lot of patience and smart application of your attacking tools. Korda doesn’t quite have that, but he’s the superior ball-striker and maybe the conditions could support his game.
Prediction: Korda in 3

Main Photo Credit: Geoff Burke-Imagn Images

Tuesday at the 2025 ATP Hangzhou Open will feature the remaining ten first-round matches.
