{"id":90103,"date":"2025-09-02T23:10:11","date_gmt":"2025-09-03T03:10:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/?p=90103"},"modified":"2025-09-02T23:10:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T03:10:11","slug":"venus-williams-plans-to-keep-playing-after-us-open","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/2025\/09\/02\/venus-williams-plans-to-keep-playing-after-us-open\/","title":{"rendered":"Venus Williams Plans to Keep Playing After US Open Doubles Run Ends"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Venus Williams said on Tuesday that she intends to continue her tennis career following her exit from the US Open women&#8217;s doubles alongside partner Leylah Fernandez.<\/p>\n<p>The 45-year-old tennis legend and Fernandez had their doubles campaign cut short in the quarterfinals, suffering a 6-1 6-2 defeat against top seeds Katerina Siniakova and <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/2025\/08\/31\/taylor-townsend-barbora-krejcikova-dramatic-comeback-us-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">Taylor Townsend<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Williams, who <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/2025\/07\/23\/venus-williams-wins-on-tour-at-the-age-of-45\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">made her return to tennis in July<\/a> after being away for 16 months, said she was satisfied with her performances in New York and that she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Dgd3otMU2j0\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">plans<\/a> to keep playing as long as opportunities allow.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If there is opportunity for me to play, then hopefully I can get back somewhere this year,&#8221; said Williams, who got wild cards into the singles, doubles, and mixed doubles draws at the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/tennis\/category\/us-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\">US Open<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Williams, 45, and her 22-year-old teammate had previously knocked out two seeded teams on their way to the quarterfinals and had not lost a set throughout the tournament.<\/p>\n<p><a  id=\"BOLNtyGyTkdiHHZZRenG5g\" class=\"gie-single\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/2233255768\" target=\"_blank\" style=\"color:#a7a7a7;text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;border:none;display:inline-block;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'BOLNtyGyTkdiHHZZRenG5g',sig:'9Sziwkm-q_7JOV9cNrh-Z6PDgcKQSNXbO7VZCz1Kj58=',w:'594px',h:'410px',items:'2233255768',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<p>However, Townsend and Siniakova, who have secured two Grand Slam titles together, proved to be too formidable for the American-Canadian wild card team, finishing the match in just 57 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Following her first-round exit in singles, Williams seemed emotional, but she was all smiles as she received a standing ovation from the audience.<\/p>\n<p>When asked if her recent comeback performances had rekindled her passion for tennis, she responded, &#8220;I have always been in love with the game.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I never had to think about if I loved the game. I was always playing, so it&#8217;s part of my DNA.
