The largest tennis stadium in the world often hosts thrilling matches and stunning upsets later in the tournament. Ashe draws A-list celebrities, top ESPN announcers, and fans willing to spend excessive amounts of money. Missing from Ashe thus far in this tournament: competitive men’s tennis. To a lesser extent, this pattern holds for the other two show courts at the National Tennis Center.

Only One Five Setter

One of the great features that sets men’s Grand Slam events apart is the need to win three sets to win a match. This requirement helps foster huge momentum swings and tests the toughness of top players. Five setters bring drama to the event, but rarely in Ashe.

As of close of play Thursday, 96 of the 127 matches in the men’s singles tournament are complete. 10 of these, over 10% of the matches played, were played on Ashe. It took until the last one, late Thursday night, for Tommy Paul and Nuno Borges for an Ashe match to go the distance. While this one match proved to be a late night Ashe epic, the men’s matches on Ashe thus far have been plain boring.

The 20 men’s singles matches contested on other show courts brought similar results. Louis Armstrong Stadium and The Grandstand court can hold just over 15,000 and 8,000 fans respectively. Only three of the 20 matches played thus far on these two courts went five sets. Of course, Daniil Medvedev’s five set circus-like loss to Benjamin Bonzi created buzz across the tennis world. Still, it is the only men’s five setter played on Armstrong to date.

Embed from Getty Images

Excitement on the Outer Courts

Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz dominate the men’s game right now. Alexander Zverev, Djokovic and others are not far behind. It is not their fault they dominate matches on Ashe, that is why there are there. Still, US Open drama is found away from Ashe. The outer courts are the heart and soul of the first two rounds of the US Open.

The capacity of the outer courts at the US Open ranges from over 2,000 on Court 17 to under 1,000 on some of the smaller courts. In some cases, fans can watch two matches at the same time as only a few rows of bleachers divide courts. There have been 17 five-setters on the outer courts. Adding in four set matches and nearly 60% of these men’s singles matches have produced significant drama. .

On Monday, Karen Khachanov played young American Nishesh Basavareddy on Court 17 the crowd swelled throughout the match. During an extremely tight fourth set, the pro-American crowd roared with every point won by the American. In the end, Khachanov had too much for the kid, but the atmosphere was far superior to the blowouts in Ashe.

Likewise, fan favorite Gael Monfils narrowly dropped a five setter to Roman Safiullin on Tuesday. The small sets of bleachers on Court 5 overflowed with fans trying to get a peak at an incredibly dramatic match. Seen and heard only on ESPN+, this court was the place to be late on Tuesday.

On Wednesday alone, five seeded men lost five set matches played on outer courts. #11 Holger Rune and #12 Casper Rudd each lost five setters on the same court. The outer courts brought the excitement, even if not on TV

ESPN Should Adjust

Night after night, year after year, ESPN announcers try to create drama and excitement during relatively boring men’s matches. While stars like Carlos Alcaraz do draw television eyeballs, the play shown on the biggest stage has been boring. Showing celebrities like Rory Mcilroy and Lin Manuel Miranda does not make the tennis any better.

ESPN mistakenly stays with Ashe too long. Corporate sponsors may force the hand of the producers, but there is more compelling tennis available. For those willing to pay, ESPN+ does give the opportunity to see the drama but, at least sometimes, the outer courts should be seen on the main broadcast.

Times Will Change

As the contenders continue to separate themselves from the pretenders, the atmosphere will change. As the field shrinks and the top players begin to face each other, Ashe will come to life. The outer courts will become the place to see doubles and the juniors and the TV cameras will rightly hone in on Alcaraz, Sinner and the rest. Then, Ashe will be worth the premium ticket and the TV attention. Still, for the first week, the outer courts the place where tennis dreams come true.

Main Photo Credit: Danielle Parhizkaran-USA TODAY Sports

Arthur Ashe Stadium possesses all the glitz and glamour of the US Open.
