After the World no.173 became the first player from Hong Kong to win a singles match at a Grand Slam, he has added to that, winning his second round match at the US Open.

History for Hong Kong

Wong came through three US Open qualifying rounds to make the first round of a Major for the first time, and marked that occasion with a straight sets victory over American Aleksandar Kovacevic.

Thus making him a Hong Kong hero, as he achieved something nobody from Hong Kong had ever done. History didn’t stop there either, as he backed up his first round win with an equally impressive second round victory over Adam Walton in four sets.

His success so far has set up a clash with world no.14 Andrey Rublev, and with Wong entering the contest with nothing to lose, expect the youngster to put up a strong fight against the Russian.

Junior Champion

While Wong continues to break new ground, his love for tennis seemingly came by chance. His older sister was due to have tennis lessons in Hong Kong when they were young, but she fell ill. Instead of wasting the money, Wong took the lessons instead!

Fast forward years later and he made the lifechanging decision to move to Spain and join the Rafael Nadal Academy. A decision that clearly paid off, as he won two Junior Grand Slams–both in doubles, first at the 2021 US Open and the second at the 2022 Australian Open, at the same time his idol Nadal won his 21st Grand Slam title.

Embed from Getty Images

One for the Future

Still at just 21 years old, Wong is certainly a player to look out for in the future. In his short time on Tour so far, he has already picked up impressive wins. His most notable came against now-world no.6 Ben Shelton in Miami earlier this year.

Although, if he can come through his third round clash against Rublev, that will undoubtably be the biggest victory of his career so far. With how he is playing, you cannot put it past him to shock the world.

Main Photo Credit: Mike Frey-Imagn Images

21-year-old Coleman Wong continues to make history and break new ground for his nation.
