British tennis ended Round 1 with four victories and four losses.

British Success

World No.5 Jack Draper, who is defending semifinal points, looked out of match practice in places but got the job done in four sets in his first match since Wimbledon.

Draper will be hoping to dust the cobwebs off quickly and go on another deep run in the final Major of the year.

Emma Radacanu raced into the second round, picking up her fastest ever Grand Slam victory. She only dropped three games in a match that lasted little over an hour, showing that she is a potential outsider to reign victorious once more in New York.

Cam Norrie produced a couple of solid sets of tennis, before Seb Korda retired due to ongoing injury troubles.

Jacob Fearnley’s put his recent run of bad form behind him as he defeated Roberto Bautista Agut to make the second round of the US Open for the first time.

Despite it being a good win, Fearnley continued to really struggle with his serve. While he fired 20 aces in four sets, he also double faulted 18 times. His serve is definitely an area he will have to work on if he is to make it deeper into the tournament and improve at the rate he has been doing.

Unfortunately for British tennis fans, the victories ended there.

Embed from Getty Images

British Disappointment

Lucky loser Billy Harris was edged out in straight sets by Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime. After losing in the final qualifying round, Harris was offered a lifeline, making his US Open main draw debut and lost out to the 25th seed in a high quality affair.

Katie Boulter, who is going through a bad run of form, lost out to 27th seed Marta Kostyuk in straight sets.

Her serve really let her down once more, double faulting on big points multiple times. It seems as though she would benefit from a break from tennis, as she continues to drop down the WTA rankings.

Sonay Kartal lost out in the rollercoaster three sets to Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, perhaps unsurprisingly given her recent form. The 23-year-old has not won a match since her run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon.

Francesca Jones, one of few Brits on a good run of form, had her eight-match win streak ended by Eva Lys.

After coming through qualifying, Jones was making her US Open debut. Despite struggling in the first set, the 24-year-old battled and was a break up on two occasions in the second.

Although she eventually lost out in straight sets, she will no doubt learn from this experience and come back stronger.

A Mixed Bag

All in all, British tennis is a bit of a mixed bag at the moment. There are arguably genuine contenders for big titles on both the male and female tour, thanks to Draper and Radacanu.

Both their most successful runs at Grand Slams have come in New York – Draper reached the semifinal last year, and Raducanu famously won the 2021 US Open without dropping a set as a qualifier.

On the other hand, there are a couple of players really struggling for form at the moment and the depth of British tennis is not as good as other major countries.

Countries like America, Italy, and Russia have big names on both the WTA and ATP tour. While of course, in comparison to some of these countries, Britain’s population is tiny, British tennis players will be hoping to emulate the success of players from these countries.

Main Photo Credit: Mike Frey-USA TODAY Sports

Jack Draper, Emma Raducanu, and Cam Norrie booked their places in Round 2on the first two days of the US Open, but Tuesday was far less successful for the Brits.
