No. 1 seed Jannik Sinner squares off against the always-fiesty Alexei Popyrin. Offering their insights are Ateet Shrivastava, Damian Kust, and Nurein Ahmed. But who will advance?

US Open Day 5 Men’s Predictions

Gabriel Diallo vs Jaume Munar

Ateet
Gabriel Diallo hit 17 aces against Damir Dzumhur to get back-to-back first-round wins at the US Open. It was a tight match lasting well over 3 hours, and Diallo played a great fourth set to close it out. Jaume Munar has played at a high level on hard courts this season, and his first-round win against Jaime Faria was a testament to that. I expect a battle in this one, but going with the Canadian.
Prediction: Diallo in 5

Damian
The new and improved hard-court Munar is a proper threat this year, and this should be closer than their meeting at the US Open 12 months ago. Diallo has improved a lot since, but his weaponry will have to be on point against a grinder with a slightly more offensive mindset these days.
Prediction: Diallo in 5

Nurein
This is the best we’ve seen Munar perform outside clay. He’s recorded a string of good results on hard courts this season, which he can fancy his chances of reaching the third round of the US Open for the first time. Ultimately, Diallo’s shot tolerance and his massive serve will give him the edge if he can rack up cheap points from the baseline.
Prediction: Diallo in 4

Adam Walton vs Coleman Wong

Ateet
Adam Walton played one of his best matches at a Grand Slam to get his first US Open win. He was more solid than Ugo Humbert and got broken just once in the entire match. Coleman Wong continued his impressive run from qualifying to get a straight-sets win in the first round. Both players are in good form and played a close match when they met earlier this season. I’ll give a slight edge to Walton.
Prediction: Walton in 5

Damian
Wong posted a big win over Shelton in Miami and then lost to Walton. Maybe history will repeat itself here. But it would be nice for him if it doesn’t, he’s flying the flag for Hong Kong as the first man representing the country in a Grand Slam main draw in the Open Era. He’s got the higher upside and needs to try not to crumble against the solid game of Walton.
Prediction: Wong in 5

Nurein
To say the draw has been kind to Walton and Wong is an overstatement. Both players earned it. Walton took out a seed in his opening, and Wong battled three rounds of qualifying and then knocked out a Top 100 player to reach the second round. This will probably be scrappy, but Walton’s low-margin game and superior ground strokes might tilt this in his favor.
Prediction: Walton in 5

Embed from Getty Images

Jenson Brooksby vs Flavio Cobolli

Ateet
Both players had to battle till the end in their first round match, and will be looking to improve their level in this one. Brooksby’s level was still better in his match as Cobolli hit 15 double faults and made over 50 unforced errors. I can see this going five sets.
Prediction: Brooksby in 5

Damian
Both looked quite vulnerable in the opening round and had to survive five-setters. The quirky game and character of Brooksby have led to a number of surprising outcomes this season as he’s struggled to get things going consistently. This is his first US Open appearance since 2022, but in the past, he stepped up when needed in New York.
Prediction: Brooksby in 5

Nurein
This is a very interesting match and one that will most likely deliver in terms of quality. I think we’re past the narrative that Brooskby is working his way back. He’s already bagged a title and returned to the Top 100 after a tumultuous couple of seasons. Cobolli has improved by leaps and bounds in that time, but is still vulnerable on hard courts.
Prediction: Brooksby in 5

Jannik Sinner vs Alexei Popyrin

Ateet
Jannik Sinner rolled through his opponent in the first round and looks set for another dominant campaign. Alexei Popyrin has a good serve and will give a better fight, but I can’t see him troubling Sinner enough to win a set.
Prediction: Sinner in 3

Damian
Popyrin is perhaps the best unseeded player in the draw, and after a solid Toronto/Cincinnati double, he would be a threat to practically anybody. But he’s facing Sinner, who’s just a groundstroke machine, and you have to try your best to be very unpredictable to beat him. Popyrin cannot do that; he’ll just try to play him the normal way.
Prediction: Sinner in 3

Nurein
Sinner underlined his dominance in a straight-sets rout in his opening match. It would take an elite serving performance from Popyrin to keep this close, even though the Aussie has previously beaten the World No. 1. Sinner is about to get his revenge, that’s four years in the making.
Prediction: Sinner in 4

Main Photo Credit: Susan Mullane – Imagn Images

The second round of the 2025 US Open continues on Day 5 with many scintillating matchups.
