With the quick conditions rewarding clean ball-striking but also punishing lapses in consistency, there’s room for surprises. As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match on the schedule. But who will advance?

WTA Cincinnati Day 3 Predictions

Ekaterina Alexandrova vs Lulu Sun

Head-to-Head: Alexandrova 1–1 Sun

Both players arrive with contrasting preparation paths, which could play a role here. Ekaterina Alexandrova’s recent results have been mixed, but her firepower can take the racquet out of an opponent’s hands when it clicks. Lulu Sun has been more active on the summer hard courts, and her ability to handle variety makes her a handful. If Alexandrova’s timing is off, the rallies could get away from her in what has been a tricky matchup for her in the past.

Prediction: Sun in 3

Diana Shnaider vs Cristina Bucsa

Head-to-Head: first meeting

This has the feel of a clash between rhythm and raw pace. Diana Shnaider hasn’t been able to string together back-to-back wins since the start of the grass season, but still carries the kind of ball-striking that can take matches out of her opponent’s hands. Bucsa, stepping in as a lucky loser, hasn’t enjoyed a strong run of results lately and will need to lean on her defensive skills to blunt the lefty’s power. If Shnaider keeps the errors in check, she’ll control most rallies, though Bucsa’s counterpunching could keep this one competitive.

Prediction: Shnaider in 3

Embed from Getty Images

Diana Shnaider vs Yue Yuan

Head-to-Head: Yuan 3–0 Shnaider

Diana Shnaider’s aggression and early ball-striking can set the tone from the first shot, but her inconsistency this summer leaves the door open. Yuan, making the most of her lucky loser entry, is dangerous when she finds depth and rhythm, especially off her forehand. If she can match Shnaider’s tempo, she has the tools to extend rallies; if not, the points could stay short and sharp.

Prediction: Yuan in 3

Magdalena Frech vs Sorana Cirstea

Head-to-Head: Frech 1–0 Cirstea

Neither player has been in exceptional form, although Sorana Cirstea did get a boost with a first-round win here. Cincinnati’s quick courts can reward outright aggression as well as smart redirection of pace, giving both a path to success. Magdalena Frech won their sole encounter, using her movement and variety to grind Cirstea down. Cirstea has the firepower to hit through the court when she’s seeing the ball well, and should have every chance to level the head-to-head here. This contrast in styles could hinge on whether Cirstea can impose herself early before Frech finds her footing in the match.

Prediction: Cirstea in 3

Embed from Getty Images

Amanda Anisimova vs Leolia Jeanjean

Head-to-Head: first meeting

Amanda Anisimova has been building steady momentum through the summer hard-court swing, picking up solid wins and finding her range from the baseline. Leolia Jeanjean’s appearances at this level are more sporadic, but she’s coming off a run of qualifying matches that could help her settle quickly. Their shot-making styles mean there will be plenty of quick exchanges, but consistency in the big moments should make the difference here.

Prediction: Anisimova in 2

Main Photo Credit: Mike Frey – Imagn Images

The second round at WTA Cincinnati brings a mix of players in form, some still searching for rhythm, and a few making the most of late entries into the draw.
