But who will secure their place in the third round in Cincinnati?

ATP Cincinnati Day 3 Predictions

Lorenzo Musetti vs Benjamin Bonzi

Head-to-head: Musetti 3-1 Bonzi

It’s not like on hard courts the door is always wide open for an upset against Lorenzo Musetti, but the underdogs don’t feel the same pressure coming from the Italian as on natural surfaces. Benjamin Bonzi has beaten some big names before with Daniil Medvedev recently falling to him in the Wimbledon opening round. Musetti should have enough time to lean into his versatility and take over, but it’s not quite as lopsided as it would have been if the conditions suited the artistry of his game a bit more.

Prediction: Musetti in 3
Embed from Getty Images

Casper Ruud vs Arthur Rinderknech

Head-to-head: Ruud 4-0 Rinderknech

Four matches between them already and all eight sets have gone in Casper Ruud’s favor, but the head-to-head record might be a bit unfair to Arthur Rinderknech with only one hard-court meeting (Acapulco this year). It’s the first time they’ll meet in quicker conditions on hard, but Ruud was also winning on altitude clay in Kitzbuhel or Madrid. The Norwegian seemed pretty hungry to compete again in Toronto last week and he might still problem-solve his way out of this one if it gets dangerous.

Prediction: Ruud in 3
Embed from Getty Images

Pedro Martinez vs Tommy Paul

Head-to-head: Paul 4-1 Martinez

Tommy Paul was struggling with a few fitness issues during the summer, which hampered both his French Open and Wimbledon campaigns. Now he’s coming back in Cincinnati after missing over a month of action. It’s tough to estimate what his fitness and level will be like, but facing Pedro Martinez on hard courts seems like a decent draw to help him get going. Even a somewhat suboptimal performance from Paul could be enough to snatch the win here. And it could even be pretty comfortable.

Prediction: Paul in 2
Embed from Getty Images

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina vs Joao Fonseca

Head-to-head: first meeting

Some Joao Fonseca’s performances have been shaky of late, especially with his struggles on return in quicker hard-court conditions. At least against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina he won’t be under the same kind of pressure that Tristan Schoolkate was putting on him in Toronto. It has to be said though that the Spaniard is in amazing form this season. It’s a tough call, but perhaps a less powerful opponent will give Fonseca the freedom his aggressive game wants, kind of regardless of quality.

Prediction: Fonseca in 3

Main photo credit: Aaron Doster-Imagn Images

We can expect plenty of entertaining tennis on day two at the ATP Cincinnati Masters and, as ever, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match on the slate, including Jannik Sinner vs Daniel Elahi Galan.
