The Croatian defeated Anastasia Potapova and competed well against Karolina Muchova at the National Bank Open. She backed that up by qualifying for the Cincinnati main draw without dropping a set. Sun has been inconsistent this season, and I am not overly confident about the New Zealander rising to this challenge. Ruzic’s excellent backhand is also suited to handling Sun’s formidable forehand.

Prediction: Ruzic in 2

Ann Li vs Viktoriya Tomova

Head-to-head: Li 1-0 Tomova

This could be a tight battle. Li will try to control the rallies with her forehand and keep Tomova on the defensive. The Bulgarian is most likely to find joy by consistently targeting Li’s much weaker backhand. However, that is easier said than done. I think Li can avoid her weakness being exposed by controlling the rallies in the medium-fast conditions in Cincinnati.

Prediction: Li in 2

Varvara Gracheva vs Katie Volynets

Head-to-head: Gracheva 2-0 Volynets

Embed from Getty Images

Gracheva usually thrives most against opponents who give her time in the rallies. Volynets is a fighter with one of the best attitudes in the game, but she does not strike the ball with much power. Gracheva made that advantage count in their previous meetings. The Frenchwoman is backed to do that again and reach the next round in Cincinnati.

Prediction: Gracheva in 2

Danielle Collins vs Taylor Townsend

Head-to-head: Townsend 2-1 Collins

Townsend had been severely struggling in singles until her impressive run to the Citi DC Open quarterfinal. The two-time Grand Slam doubles champion’s variety and unconventional style have caused Collins problems before. Overall, the 2024 Miami Open winner is favored to win because her power can expose Townsend’s movement in quick conditions. But Townsend pulling off a third win against her compatriot would not be very surprising.

Prediction: Collins in 3

Credit: Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Danielle Collins has struggled to find consistent form this season.
