As ever, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match on the schedule, including Alex de Minaur vs Francisco Comesana and Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Christopher O’Connell. But who will secure their spot in the third round?

ATP Toronto Day 4 Predictions

Cameron Norrie vs Aleksandar Vukic

Head-to-head: Norrie 1-0 Vukic

Cameron Norrie tallied two excellent wins in Washington before losing to Brandon Nakashima in the last 16. Now he must hope his level remains intact in Toronto after a promising few weeks for the Briton who is trying to climb back up the rankings. History is not on Norrie’s side – he is winless in his last two trips – but Aleksandar Vukic doesn’t really have any form to speak of – notwithstanding a straight-sets win over the clay-courter Pedro Martinez in the first round. His willingness to take control of points early will be crucial to his chances of a big win, but in the end Norrie should have too much.

Prediction: Norrie in 3
Embed from Getty Images

Flavio Cobolli vs Alexis Galarneau

Head-to-head: first meeting

Alexis Galarneau scored his first main draw win in three tries at his home tournament with a 7-6 6-3 victory over Arthur Rinderknech. Flavio Cobolli, meanwhile, is having a fantastic season. He picked up two titles before the French Open and rose up to the dizzying heights of the top 20 for the first time. It’s easy to take your eyes off the ball when some of the major objectives for the season have been accomplished, but the Italian has plenty to play for in the remaining three months of the season. Expect him to make a winning start at ATP Toronto.

Prediction: Cobolli in 2

Gabriel Diallo vs Matteo Gigante

Head-to-head: Diallo 1-1 Gigante

Gabriel Diallo became the latest first-time Tour-level champion during the grass swing when he bagged the ATP 250 in Den Bosch. He was then one set away from a monumental shock against eventual semifinalist Taylor Fritz at Wimbledon, but lost in five. It’s clear that the Canadian will be a menace in the coming months if his baseline authority continues to grow. Although the ranking gap is significant, Diallo can ill afford to take Matteo Gigante lightly. The Italian, who is also 23, beat Diallo in the qualifying at last year’s Wimbledon and showed impressive mental strength to turn a deficit into victory against Borna Coric in his opening match in Toronto. The composed and high-flying Diallo will likely have an edge, but this could easily go to three sets.

Prediction: Diallo in 3
Embed from Getty Images

Frances Tiafoe vs Yosuke Watanuki

Head-to-head: Tiafoe 1-1 Watanuki

Yosuke Watanuki’s bold shotmaking in this matchup earned him a stunning victory over Frances Tiafoe in his run to the Indian Wells fourth round earlier this season. The Japanese man faces a tough task to replicate that awe-inspiring performance where he hit 47 winners past a shellshocked Tiafoe. Timing and flattening out shots will be key for Watanuki to prevent the American from settling into any patterns. Tiafoe won’t have the safety blanket of rhythm if Watanuki is clean and aggressive. This is a very tough draw for the seventh seed.

Prediction: Watanuki in 3

Main photo credit: Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

It should be an entertaining fourth day at the ATP Toronto Masters with a number of intriguing matches on the slate in Canada.
