Meanwhile, Tampere was full of players trying to secure their US Open qualifying spots with both finalists (Nicolai Budkov Kjaer and Sascha Gueymard Wayenburg) eventually getting there. George Loffhagen was the maiden champion this time and there are no words to describe what took place in the Bloomfield Hills final. The Frenchman raised the bar further in Zug, making his first semifinal of the season without dropping a set. A rain-heavy Saturday forced the players to compete twice on the last day of the tournament with Mayot finding himself in a battle against Stefanos Sakellaridis. Having almost made it into the doubles final with Geoffrey Blancaneaux, the 23-year-old was in for a hell of a ride.

Lukas Klein produced a phenomenal week of tennis in San Marino before grabbing a special exempt into Zug. The conditions weren’t identical at the two events, but still relatively close with faster clay courts and a bit of altitude. That made the transition relatively simple and Klein was a monster again, getting to nine wins in a row by the time he made another final. Only this year’s Australian Open junior champion, Henry Bernet, was able to take a set off him in the first four matches.

Both players had to play their semifinals on Sunday morning, but Mayot was significantly more banged up by the final. He had very little response to Klein’s aggression and somehow got the second set through sheer dedication. The Slovak avoided the simple execution errors on the offense in the decider and never gave his opponent another look, eventually capturing his 5th Challenger title 6-2 6-7(4) 6-4. He now finds himself about 120 points away from the Top 100 and will take a couple of weeks off before heading to North America to play one event before US Open qualifying. Mayot also sits one out, but will be back in Kozerki.

Bloomfield Hills

Andres Martin made some early Challenger impact after his brilliant college career for Georgia Tech, but needed a while to adjust to the tour long-term. This season he had mostly been unimpressive at the Challenger level, although he did lock up three quarterfinal appearances. After getting some rough draws recently, the American finally took that next step and made a Challenger final thanks to a comeback win over Alexis Galarneau and then a semifinal victory against Eliot Spizzirri.

Mark Lajal has produced some insane level at times this year, but his ranking climb hasn’t been particularly quick with only two Challenger semifinals since the start of the season. The Estonian was ruthless from the get-go in Bloomfield Hills, losing just three games each to Omar Jasika, August Holmgren, and Yu-Hsiou Hsu. Only Arthur Fery was able to push him, but Lajal still made it to his 3rd Challenger final (2023 Little Rock, 2024 Zhangjiagang).

Embed from Getty Images

Martin stole the first set, digging as deep as possible without mining equipment and punishing Lajal for sloppy execution. The Estonian did one thing right though – he always trusted the attacking play, no matter what. After over 3 hours and 20 minutes of action in scorching heat, he came out on top by saving 5 match points and claimed his 2nd Challenger title 6-7(7) 7-5 7-6(9). Martin gave him one cheap error on a match point on his serve in the TB and Lajal was very fortunate with a net cord at 4-5 as well. After all of that, the 22-year-old will make his Top 150 debut as both finalists are playing Lexington (Martin on a special exempt).

Segovia

Embed from Getty Images

George Loffhagen picked up three ITF titles since the start of the year, before receiving plenty of wildcard opportunities on grass. The Brit’s career had been consistently hampered by injuries and now he’s finally playing a regular schedule. In just his fourth Challenger appearance of the season, Loffhagen survived a three-hour match against top-seeded Hugo Grenier before going to the deciding tie-break with Edas Butvilas. Before this week, he had never made it past the quarterfinals in a Challenger.

Nicolas Alvarez Varona was once regarded as a brilliant Spanish prospect, but after achieving significant results early in his career, he struggled to stay healthy for a while. Almost exactly three years since his most recent Challenger final at Liberec in 2022, the 24-year-old had a strong case to make a run in Segovia after reaching the semifinals last year. This time Alvarez Varona made it even further with a clutch win against Aryan Shah in the final four.

Alvarez Varona had a few big opportunities in the opening set (0/6 on break points, 2 set points at 5-4), but Loffhagen’s monster serve +1 forehand combos were taking care of all that. The Brit then seemed so far ahead throughout set 2 and the scoreboard wasn’t catching up. It was Alvarez Varona who got the first break of the match at the start of the decider with Loffhagen finally cracking him from 0-3 down to claim his 1st Challenger title 7-6(4) 6-7(4) 6-4. Both players are competing in Porto next with the runner-up needing a special exempt.

Tampere

When Sascha Gueymard Wayenburg won Quimper at the beginning of the season, it came a bit out of nowhere and opened a lot of doors for the young Frenchman. But he wasn’t really barging in and didn’t win consecutive matches at the Challenger level until Tampere. Once more out of the blue, the 21-year-old started by defeating last week’s Buschoten runner-up Kimmer Coppejans and produced another big run to ensure his US Open qualifying participation.

Nicolai Budkov Kjaer was also looking to secure his spot in New York and couldn’t have gotten off to a better start, surviving a potentially tricky opener against Alex Barrena in straight sets. The crucial match turned out to be his semifinal against Hynek Barton with the second set lasting over an hour. The Norwegian needed that win to make sure he will be in US Open qualifying, and he got it. The 18-year-old secured his second Challenger final after winning the title in Glasgow earlier this year.

Not much was splitting them for the first two sets. Gueymard Wayenburg was producing a very aggressive version of his game with Budkov Kjaer just forced to try to pin him in the backhand corner and look for potential down-the-line spots. The Frenchman has such a strong, physical frame, but even when he extended the match it wasn’t enough to break his opponent. Budkov Kjaer secured his 2nd Challenger title 7-6(5) 6-7(2) 6-2 and will break the Top 200. He will now switch to hard courts in Astana, while the runner-up stays on clay in Liberec.

Events held this week:

Eupago Porto Open (Challenger 100, hard)

Platzmann Open (Hagen, Challenger 75, clay)

Lexington Open (Challenger 75, hard)

Svijany Open (Liberec, Challenger 75, clay)

President’s Cup (Astana, Challenger 50, hard)

Botic van de Zandschulp (Hagen) will be the only Top 100 player in action.

First-round matches to watch:

Porto

(1) Jaime Faria vs Elias Ymer

Aslan Karatsev vs Mikhail Kukushkin

Hagen

(4) Jerome Kym vs Kimmer Coppejans

(WC) Niels McDonald vs (7) Facundo Diaz Acosta

Lexington

(1) Nishesh Basavareddy vs Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez

(WC) Antoine Ghibaudo vs (JR) Rei Sakamoto

Liberec

Valentin Vacherot vs (WC) Petr Brunclik

(WC) Maxim Mrva vs Santiago Rodriguez Taverna

Astana

Shinataro Imai vs (WC) Amir Omarkhanov

(8) Ricardas Berankis vs (WC) Zangar Nurlanuly

Main Photo Credit: Danielle Parhizkaran-USA TODAY Sports

Lukas Klein was unstoppable for the second week straight and with back-to-back Challenger 125 titles, he secured 250 points in San Marino and Zug.
