Wimbledon’s contentious expansion plan is poised to proceed after a High Court judge dismissed a legal challenge against the decision to approve the proposal on Monday.<\/p>\n
The “Save Wimbledon Park” advocacy group initiated legal action<\/a> against the Greater London Authority’s approval last year for a planning permission that would nearly triple the area designated for the grass-court Grand Slam.<\/p>\n The plans include the development of 38 additional tennis courts and an 8,000-seat stadium on the site of the former Wimbledon Park Golf Club, enabling it to host All England Club qualifiers on-site rather than at Roehampton in south London.<\/p>\n Attorneys representing the campaign group argued in the High Court earlier this month that the choice to endorse the plans was “irrational” and should be annulled since Wimbledon Park is subject to usage restrictions.<\/p>\n However, officials from Wimbledon<\/a> countered that the challenge was unfounded, explaining that the decision was a “planning judgement properly exercised” and that the restrictions were not of “material” concern.<\/p>\n In a decision made on Monday, Justice Saini rejected the challenge.<\/p>\n “In short, the defendant’s decision on the relevance of deliverability, applying to both the statutory trust and the restrictive covenants, was a planning judgement rationally exercised and having regard to appropriate and relevant factors,” he said.<\/p>\n Initial planning permission for the project was granted by Jules Pipe, London’s deputy mayor for planning, who indicated that the proposals would facilitate very significant benefits which clearly outweigh the harm.<\/p>\n After the High Court ruling on Monday, the campaign group expressed<\/a> that they would appeal the decision.<\/p>\n
