The altitude adds a layer of unpredictability, with fast momentum swings and unique conditions that can shape outcomes in unexpected ways. As always, we here at LWOT are predicting every the matches on day one, but who do you think will reach the second round?

ATP Kitzbuhel Day 1 Predictions

Francisco Comesana vs Tristan Boyer

Head-to-Head: Comesana 2-0 Boyer

Francisco Comesana has quietly put together a string of solid performances on clay over the past few months, including a quarterfinal run in Gstaad that should give him confidence. Tristan Boyer, by contrast, is still relatively new to the tour and has been having a tough time of late and is currently riding a five match losing streak at all levels. The American has a clean game and a solid temperament, but the Argentine’s heavier topspin and court coverage could be a problem over time. If Comesana starts well, he may have too much consistency for Boyer to handle. Still, the altitude could help Boyer’s serve and keep things close for a while.

Prediction: Comesana in 2
Embed from Getty Images

Alexander Shevchenko vs Daniel Elahi Galan

Head-to-Head: Shevchenko 1-0 Galan

Alexander Shevchenko hasn’t had the most consistent season, but his recent form has looked more promising especially on clay, where he’s been able to dictate with his forehand. Daniel Elahi Galan, on the other hand, has struggled to find momentum since the early part of the year and comes into this without much match play. If Shevchenko serves well and keeps his unforced errors down, he should be able to control the rallies. That said, Galan’s ability to absorb pace and extend points might frustrate him if he loses patience. This could go in phases, depending on who stays locked in mentally.

Prediction: Shevchenko in 2

Joel Schwaerzler vs Marton Fucsovics

Head-to-Head: first meeting

Marton Fucsovics has seen it all over the years, but although he is probably in the twilight years of his career, he reamins a threat on clay thanks to his athleticism and weight of shot. Joel Schwaerzler enters as a wildcard with little to lose, but should buoyed by a supportive home crowd and a few decent results at lower levels. The Austrian will need to serve well and stay aggressive if he wants to hang with Fucsovics from the baseline. This might be a learning experience for Schwaerzler, but if he feeds off the atmosphere and gets the crowd involved, there’s a chance he could make it interesting – especially if Fucsovics starts slow.

Prediction: Fucsovics in 3
Embed from Getty Images

Arthur Rinderknech vs Facundo Bagnis

Head-to-Head: Bagnis 1–0 Rinderknech

Arthur Rinderknech hasn’t had a smooth return to clay after Wimbledon, losing early in Gstaad and still looking for form. The conditions in Kitzbühel are similar, which could suit Facundo Bagnis who has already picked up two qualifying wins and holds a head-to-head edge from their 2023 meeting. Rinderknech’s serve and flat hitting can do damage at altitude, but he’ll need to be cleaner than he was last week. If Bagnis settles into long rallies, he has the edge in consistency. It could come down to whether Rinderknech can strike first and sustain his level.

Prediction: Bagnis in 3

Hugo Gaston vs Norbert Gombos

Head-to-Head: first meeting

Hugo Gaston’s game is tailor-made for disruption—he loves throwing in drop shots, spins, and changes of pace that can really unsettle opponents. Norbert Gombos comes in having come through qualifying, which means he’s had time to adjust to the conditions and build confidence. The Slovakian’s more straightforward power-based game could either hit through Gaston or unravel if he gets pulled out of his comfort zone. If Gaston plays with purpose and manages the flair well, he should make life difficult for Gombos. But if he gets too cute or passive, the match could easily turn against him.

Prediction: Gombos in 3

Main photo credit: Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

The ATP Kitzbuhel first round brings together emerging names, home favorites, and battle-tested clay specialists all aiming to finish their summer stretch on the terre battue on a high note.
