Meanwhile, Dino Prizmic suffered just his second loss in the last 20 matches at the expense of Lukas Klein in the San Marino final. Jan Choinski grabbed his second trophy of the month, while Daniel Merida became this week’s maiden Challenger champion. Read up on last week’s action:

San Marino

Dino Prizmic is giving himself plenty of time to rest between tournaments, but has also needed it with all the deep runs he’s reaching. San Marino was on the Croat’s 4th tournament since the start of May with the 19-year-old taking titles in Zagreb and Bratislava before losing in the Milan final. This scheduling seems to be working for Prizmic and he only dropped one set on the way to his fourth consecutive final, defeating No. 2 seed Thiago Agustin Tirante in the semifinals.

Lukas Klein has fallen off this year with the Challenger runs coming few and far in between, with most of his best performances presenting themselves rather at the Grand Slam qualifying stage. But that all changed in San Marino. The early matches were still messy with the Slovak taking out No. 1 seed Valentin Royer in a three-setter in the second round. Altitude conditions really suited his aggression and Klein didn’t even drop serve in dismissals of Lukas Neumayer or Matteo Gigante.

Embed from Getty Images

Klein’s clinical attacking tennis from the last few rounds was giving Prizmic some real issues with the way the ball travels through the San Marino air. The Slovak fell behind a break early but got it right back and just had a blinder from there, playing with immense confidence and executing at an extremely high standard. These last few performances from Klein last week were all unreal and he delivered another one to claim his 4th Challenger title 6-3 6-4. Due to this run he had to withdraw from Kitzbuhel qualifying, but took a special exempt for Zug instead. Prizmic received a main draw wildcard for the ATP 250 in Umag.

Bunschoten

Embed from Getty Images

Jan Choinski won his 4th Challenger title in Troyes at the start of the month, before getting blown out by Botic van de Zandschulp in Braunschweig. His next event was Bunschoten and we quickly saw that was just a momentary blip. The No. 5 seed took out players like in-form Matej Dodig in the second round and then outlasted No. 2 seed Guy den Ouden in the semifinals. Choinski secured a chance to grab multiple Challenger titles in a season for the first time in career.

Kimmer Coppejans recently fell into a streak of bad losses and on top of that, drew Joao Lucas Reis da Silva for the second week in a row. Despite going down 1-6 3-5, he saved a match point and beat the Brazilian to suddenly find his confidence again. He needed to up the level along with it and was able to do it, beating Alex Barrena in a thriller to reach his first Challenger final since August 2023 in Banja Luka (also first since a serious elbow injury he had surgery on last year).

The final was a back-and-forth contest with both players taking turns in dictating play. It was important for either not to get complacent and remember about staying consistent, but still being on the lookout for opportunities to attack. Choinski did that well to hold under slight pressure at 3-all in the 3rd, before watching the forehand errors fly from Coppejans in the next game. The Brit claimed his 5th Challenger title 6-4 3-6 6-3 and returns to the Top 150. He will now take a week off before appearing in Hagen, while the runner-up is playing in Tampere.

Granby

August Holmgren was just 6-14 for the season before Wimbledon qualifying and nothing was suggesting that the Dane was suddenly going to turn his whole campaign around. But after the magic he produced in London (qualified, defeated Quentin Halys and Tomas Machac in the main draw), he also kept it up in Granby. The start wasn’t easy with a serve-oriented battle against James Watt, but Holmgren fought back and eventually defeated No. 1 seed Eliot Spizzirri in the semifinals.

Liam Draxl just cannot stop making Challenger finals. After losing to Rei Sakamoto in Cary and defeating Alexander Blockx in Winnipeg, the Canadian overcame a tough start against Alfredo Perez to maintain the run and finally reach his 3rd final in as many weeks (7th of the season). In the semifinals he met Blockx again, saving four set points to close out the match in straights and ensure a new career-high ranking for the Monday after Granby.

Embed from Getty Images

Draxl knows how to grind and shrink the court, but it wasn’t working out that well against Holmgren. While the Dane was looking untouchable on serve, his forehand also turned out to be surprisingly consistent at just continuously drilling holes in his opponent’s defense. For the first time all week, Draxl’s heart for the game and fighting spirit just had zero impact as he got blown off the court with Holmgren taking his 3rd Challenger title 6-3 6-3. He plays in Bloomfield Hills this week, while the runner-up will take some rest before appearing at the ATP 1000 in Toronto with a wildcard.

Pozoblanco

Fajing Sun produced a breakthrough run to a Challenger title in Wuxi in May, which eventually also led him to appear at Wimbledon qualifying. But his form since had been far from impressive, even when he played an ITF event just before Pozoblanco. The Chinese withstood a second set fight-back from Darwin Blanch early in the tournament before snapping the 8-match win streak of Tiago Pereira in the semifinals to reach another Challenger final, this time a long way from home.

Daniel Merida is also mounting up an impressive campaign with milestones reached, especially his first Challenger final in Lyon in June. The Spaniard hadn’t played a hard-court tournament since February before Pozoblanco, defeating Rafael Jodar in an all-Spanish youngster showdown in the second round. It turned out Merida can now succeed on this surface too with the 20-year-old stopping the runs of two Brits in a row – Johannus Monday and Oliver Crawford.

Compared to, for example, the San Marino final, it was like Merida and Sun were playing tennis in slow-motion. That wasn’t a good omen for the Chinese as he wasn’t able to ramp up the pace and utilize his early timing off the ground. Merida hit a few spicy counters on the run and was just playing a lot more efficiently than Sun with not as many unforced errors, claiming his 1st Challenger title 6-3 6-4. He will make his Top 200 debut and have a spot in the US Open qualifying draw. He’s playing Zug on clay this week, while Sun stays on Spanish hard courts in Segovia.

Challenger Tour magic:

Barrena made it very tough for RCB to close him out in Braunschweig last week, now makes a Bunschoten run with wins over Jianu and Droguet. Late in the third set he was just hitting these BH DTL stunners left and right. Droguet’s reactions say it all
📷: @ATPChallenger pic.twitter.com/HD7KJiEF0N

— Damian Kust (@damiankust) July 17, 2025

Events held this week:

Dialectic Zug Open (Challenger 125, clay)

Cranbrook Tennis Classic (Bloomfield Hills, Challenger 100, hard)

Open Castilla y Leon Villa de el Espinar (Segovia, Challenger 75, hard)

Tampere Open (Challenger 75, clay)

With three ATP Tour events held in the same week, there will be no Top 100 players in action.

First-round matches to watch:

Zug

(1) Zsombor Piros vs Alexander Ritschard

Daniel Merida vs (2) Marc-Andrea Huesler

Bloomfield Hills

(5) Eliot Spizzirri vs (NG) Rei Sakamoto

Yasutaka Uchiyama vs (4) Christopher Eubanks

Segovia

(1) Duje Ajdukovic vs (NG) Aryan Shah

(7) Clement Chidekh vs Matteo Martineau

Tampere

Patrick Zahraj vs (5) Viktor Durasovic

(JR) Nicolai Budkov Kjaer vs Alex Barrena

Main Photo Credit: Imago Images Copyright: xMarleenxFouchierx

In his first event since the breakout run at Wimbledon (third round from qualifying), August Holmgren claimed the title in Granby.
