That moment came on September 7, 2003, when Andy Roddick triumphed at the US Open. Since then, no other American man–excluding Roddick himself, who went on to lose four more finals, all to Roger Federer–has come close to replicating that success. Even though Taylor Fritz reached the final in New York last year, he stood no chance against Jannik Sinner.

American Tennis Bets on Fritz and Shelton

After a disappointing first half of the year, Fritz seems to have gotten back on track, making it to the semifinals at Wimbledon and coming just one point short of forcing a fifth set against two-time champion Carlos Alcaraz. However, the American player who has performed the best in Grand Slams in 2025 has undoubtedly been Ben Shelton.

At Wimbledon once again, the 22-year-old from Atlanta proved that he thrives under the spotlight. He has been consistent throughout the year–a key reason for his debut in the Top 10–but it’s in the Slams that he truly shines. The results speak for themselves: in 2025, he has improved on his previous best performances at all three Majors played so far–reaching the semifinals at the Australian Open, the fourth round at the French Open, and the quarterfinals at Wimbledon. Of course, doing even better in New York will be challenging, as it would require him to reach at least the final, but it’s not impossible.

Despite all these accomplishments, Shelton can’t be fully satisfied. A player of his ambition plays to win, and so far, he has struggled significantly against the game’s elite. Jannik Sinner leads their head-to-head 6–1, having won the last 15 sets (including all six tiebreaks), while Carlos Alcaraz holds a 3–0 lead. While Shelton is still young and has plenty of room to grow, this particular stat is hard to ignore.

A Streak of Bad Luck

Another aspect worth highlighting is Shelton’s undeniable bad luck during the 2025 Grand Slam season. Much has been said about his uncanny habit of running into Lorenzo Sonego in all three Majors–defeating him in the quarterfinals in Melbourne, the first round in Paris, and the fourth round in London. However, what’s been mentioned far less is that Shelton was eliminated by the eventual champion in all three Slams.

At the Australian Open, it was Jannik Sinner who beat him in the semifinals. At the French Open, it was Carlos Alcaraz who defeated him in the fourth round. And at Wimbledon, Sinner once again got the better of him.

Embed from Getty Images

Chasing an Unwanted Record

These defeats put Shelton in a peculiar position heading into the US Open. Should he once again lose to the eventual champion–likely to be either Sinner or Alcaraz, based on current form–Shelton would complete a rare and unfortunate feat: a kind of Calendar Year Slam of Bad Luck.

The last male player to lose to all four Slam champions in a single season was Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt in 2004. Despite winning 68 matches and four titles that year, he failed to claim a Slam. A third of his 18 losses came against Roger Federer, who defeated him in the Round of 16 at the Australian Open, in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, and in the final at the US Open. His French Open exit came at the hands of eventual champion Gastón Gaudio in the quarterfinals. But there’s more: in 2005 Hewitt played three Grand Slams and lost again to all the eventual champions (Marat Safin at the Australian Open, Roger Federer at Wimbledon and at the US Open).

A loss to Sinner or Alcaraz would have a sort of silver lining: since Shelton is in the Top 10, it would certainly come in the second week–which is still better than getting knocked out by an unseeded player in the first round. Some might even say it’s a sign of his level that it takes a future champion to defeat him–implying others wouldn’t be able to–but that’s not the kind of narrative Shelton wants. He doesn’t want to be remembered for putting up a good fight. He wants to be the one holding the trophy.

Main Photo Credit: Geoff Burke-Imagn Images

It’s been almost 8,000 days since an American male tennis player last won a Grand Slam title.
