Despite being 35, some of Marco Trungelliti’s most impressive tennis has been played in recent years, including winning a Challenger Tour title in Lyon last month. Comesana’s best level is superior to his fellow Argentine, but Trungelliti is slightly more consistent right now.

Prediction: Trungelliti in 3
Embed from Getty Images

Arthur Rinderknech vs Francesco Passaro

Head-to-head: Passaro 1-0 Rinderknech

Arthur Rinderknech created headlines at Wimbledon by beating Alexander Zverev in the first round as part of a solid run to the last 32, having also made the last eight at Queen’s Club. The Frenchman, however, is usually inconsistent throughout the season and could be upset here with clay not his favourite surface. Francesco Passaro’s overall form in 2025 has been patchy, although he played well in his qualifying matches in Gstaad. I will back Rinderknech, but that is not done with much certainty.

Prediction: Rinderknech in 3

Roberto Carballes Baena vs Carlos Taberner

Head-to-head: Carballes Baena 1-0 Taberner

Roberto Carballes Baena has a chance to make up for the time he lost earlier this year on his favourite surface. The Spaniard was injured for much of the clay-court swing that occurred before the French Open. Carlos Taberner also plays his best tennis on clay, demonstrated by winning a Challenger Tour title on the surface last month. However, the 27-year-old’s best level is not as strong as Caraballes Baena’s.

Prediction: Carballes Baena in 2
Embed from Getty Images

Stan Wawrinka vs Alexander Shevchenko

Head-to-head: Shevchenko 1-0 Wawrinka

Stan Wawrinka has only competed at clay-court tournaments since the second half of March, most of them on the Challenger Tour. The 2015 French Open champion’s results have been mixed, but he played pretty well to make the semifinal in Iasi last week. Nonetheless, Alexander Shevchenko is probably the favourite in this matchup. Wawrinka is inconsistent these days, and how well the 40-year-old will recover from playing four matches last week is not clear.

Prediction: Shevchenko in 2

Main photo credit: Susan Mullane-Imagn Images

A certain three-time Major champion will headline the action on day two at the ATP Gstaad Open with seven matches in total on the slate in Switzerland.
