Khachanov wrapped up a routine win over Kamil Majchrzak in under two hours 6-4 6-2 6-3. Aussie Jordan Thompson retired after the first set against Taylor Fritz, a banged up Thompson was no real competition for Fritz, who stands alone as the only American man to reach at least the quarterfinals of a major the last four seasons.

The five set epic between Norrie and Jarry was memorable, Jarry’s big hitting and firing winners was compelling, but he couldn’t complete the comeback, Norrie won the first two sets 6-3 7-6, and after losing tiebreaks in sets three and four, he took the 5th set 6-3 in a match where both players were excellent on serve, but Norrie especially stood out. Norrie wasn’t broken in the match as Jarry went 0-8 on break points, and that was the difference. Jarry’s run coming back from a nerve disorder was special, but Norrie is just a match away from matching his semifinal run in 2022, and the stadium will be packed for his next match.

Embed from Getty Images

That match will be an upset bid against one of the tournament co-favorites Carlos Alcaraz, Alcaraz dropped the first set to an empowered Andrey Rublev, but it was only in a first set tiebreak, and he won the next three sets with simple breaks, 6-7 6-3 6-4 6-4 in almost three hours of play. 22 aces and winning 82% of his first serve points was the difference for Alcaraz, the Spaniard saved three of the four break points he faced, Rublev couldn’t keep his game clean enough to force a fifth set, and the Spaniard will be the favorite over Norrie in the quarters.

Amanda Anisimova Reaches Third Career Grand Slam Quarterfinal

Embed from Getty Images

In the only women’s match of the day that went the distance, it was Amanda Anismova that emerged victorious. Anisimova, an inspiring story who stepped away from the game after struggles and mental health challenges, appears to fully be back as a contender for the Wimbledon title. The American was a semifinalist at the French Open in 2019, and a quarterfinalist at Wimbledon in 2022. She skipped most of 2023 after first round exits in the 2022 US Open and 2023 Australian Open, and is now back in a slam quarterfinal after returning to tour. The 6-2 5-7 6-4 win over Linda Noskova was nip and tuck, Anisimova was better on serve and will be back into the top 10 when the new rankings are released.

The other women’s quarterfinalists are Laura Siegemund, Aryna Sabalenka, and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova who all won in straight sets. Siegemund’s form on grass has been impressive, the #1 Sabalenka faced a stern challenge from Elise Mertens but was the better player, and Pavlyuchenkova overcame a failure of Wimbledon’s electronic line calling system to defeat British home hero Sonay Kartal and return to the Wimbledon quarterfinals 9 years after her previous appearance.

Cruz Hewitt Wins Wimbledon Junior Debut with Lleyton Watching

Embed from Getty Images

16-year-old Cruz Hewitt debuted in the Wimbledon Juniors with a routine win against Savva Rybkin, the confident Hewitt was stepping onto the same grounds that his father won the Wimbledon title on 23 years ago. At this point in his career, the younger Hewitt is not a clear cut superstar in junior tennis, but he clearly has talent and the right coaching support and team behind him.

The Hewitt’s will look to mirror Christian and Casper Ruud, Petr and Sebastian Korda, and Phil and Taylor Dent in terms of father-son pairs to both reach the ATP top 50 rankings. Compared to some sports, father-son duos is not a common success track on the ATP Tour, but knowing Lleyton Hewitt’s dedication to the sport, and his continued involvement in coaching with the Australian federation with players like Alex de Minaur, it’s clear Cruz will get his shot.

Main Photo Credit: Syndication: Desert Sun

Round of 16 action on Wimbledon‘s middle Sunday (launched in 2022) was compelling.
