In fact, as years go by, players’ mental wellbeing is fast becoming paramount to their success. Top players can afford to pay for a sports psychologist just so they can be in good shape both mentally and emotionally while they are on the court. For instance, five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek is known to travel with her personal sports psychologist regularly.

Djokovic, an experienced veteran in the sport and the most decorated champion in history, weighed in on the matter during a recent interview with Serbian journalist Sasa Ozmo. The 24-time Major champion believes that mental health struggles boil down to three prevalent reasons.

Novak Djokovic Reveals Three Main Factors Behind Mental Health Struggles In Tennis

1. Social Media

As most people would agree, social media plays a key role in fueling negative emotions. Tennis players try to avoid staying within the social media circles. But the nature of their job doesn’t allow them to. They need to connect with tennis fans and honor the contractual obligations of their sponsors. So it’s a necessity that they maintain a digital presence when they step away from the court.

But as many know by now, social media has its cons too, with surging cases of anxiety. Some players have resorted to consuming antidepressants to suppress the feeling.

Djokovic said, “The first thing that comes to mind is that social media is extremely present and largely dictates the mood and daily rhythm of an athlete–especially young ones, but older ones too. Everyone is on social media, and you can get lost there, get too attached to comments, to what someone types on a keyboard or phone… and that hurts. It’s not trivial. That’s something we need to talk about seriously.”

2. Lack of emotional intelligence

In his second point, Djokovic believes young players are being rushed into full-time competition without honing their emotional intelligence. The pressures of professional life and balancing outside interests eventually become a burden. Consequently, players pay that price at the expense of their long-term well-being.

Djokovic is quoted as saying, “There are various other factors. The fact is, in my opinion, that kids are pushed too early into strict professionalism, before they’ve developed emotional intelligence, which is part of psychological preparation for life. When a talent is spotted, they push them professionally–just play, play, play–and then all sorts of agents latch on, those with interest in success, and they push the player to play as much as possible so they earn more. It’s a vicious circle, and if a player gets a bit lost in that, it can strongly affect their psyche and how they live their life.”

Embed from Getty Images

3. Demanding tennis schedule

Tennis is considered one of the hardest sports to play professionally, and one of the reasons is due to its compact calendar, which runs for 11 months. Djokovic argues that tennis has the “longest season of all global sports.”

“Tennis has the longest season of all global sports. For most who play the full schedule, it’s from January 1 to late November,” the Serb said.

“Other sports have more competitions now too, but tennis is individual–there are no substitutes, no ‘I don’t feel good today, can you sub in for me for five minutes so I can rest’… Here, every point matters, every day matters. If you want to reach the highest heights, you have to transform your entire life in service of tennis and sport. You lose yourself, it’s too big of a bite for most.”

Players get as little as a three-week break to recharge or go on vacation before they embark on preparing for the new season. This has taken a toll on the body and mind. Calls for a reform of the tennis calendar have landed on deaf ears with the tennis bosses reluctant to institute changes anytime soon. In fact, some of the biggest tournaments have been expanded into a two-week format, leading to a high number of injuries and burnouts. It is the clearest hint that commercial interests continue to outweigh players’ grievances and welfare.

Main Photo Credit: Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Mental health struggles are affecting many tennis players at all levels, and former World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has spoken out on the subject.
