Unlike the chaotic first two days, during which top seeds such as Alexander Zverev, Lorenzo Musetti, Holger Rune, and Daniil Medvedev were eliminated, Day 3 was much more straightforward. The second round of men’s singles began on Day 3, with several high-profile players taking the court. Here’s a detailed recap of the day’s action.

Wimbledon Day 3 Men’s Recap

Who Looked Good

Second seed Carlos Alcaraz played much better than in his first-round match and defeated British qualifier Oliver Tarvet in straight sets, 6-4 6-3 6-2, on Centre Court. The two-time defending champion showcased his grass-court prowess, overcoming an early challenge from Tarvet in the first two sets to advance comfortably. The Spaniard faced numerous break points but saved them brilliantly. He is now on a 20-match win streak, the joint third-longest among active players.

Cameron Norrie is back to playing his best tennis, and he has chosen the perfect timing for that. He defeated Frances Tiafoe in a thrilling 4-6 6-4 6-3 7-5. Norrie played consistent and patient tennis after dropping the first set and was the more reliable player under pressure. He had a better first serve percentage and first serve win percentage, which was crucial. This was one of the two minor upsets of the day, as Tiafoe was the clear favourite before the match.

Nicolas Jarry had a difficult second-round match against Learner Tien, who was coming off a straight-sets win in the first round, but Jarry played a nearly flawless match and dispatched the American, 6-2 6-2 6-3. Jarry was untouchable behind his serve and devoured Tien’s second serve. Tien only won 35% of his second serve points and was under constant pressure all match. This marks Jarry’s first back-to-back main draw wins at the tour level since early January.

Mattia Bellucci inflicted the biggest upset of the day as he took out #23 seed, Jiri Lehecka, 7-6(7-4) 6-1 7-5. Not many people would have expected the Italian to win a set against Lehecka, let alone win in straight sets. Bellucci used all his craftiness to disrupt Lehecka, who found it hard to deal with the lefty serve. The first set proved to be crucial as Lehecka’s level dipped after that.

Embed from Getty Images

Who Looked Bad

Jiri Lehecka had an incredible run at Queen’s and was supposed to be one of the dangerous players in the draw, but was completely clueless against Mattia Bellucci and failed to figure out the Italian’s lefty serve and court craft. Lehecka was the better player in the first set, creating three break-point chances, but failed to convert and lost the set in the tiebreak. That broke him mentally, and he never seemed to recover from there.

Ethan Quinn was completely out of sorts against Kamil Majchrzak and lost 6-1 6-4 6-3. The match didn’t even last 100 minutes as Quinn struggled with rally tolerance and couldn’t find his rhythm, particularly against Majchrzak’s low balls, which neutralized Quinn’s powerful groundstrokes. The American was broken right away in all three sets and never got to put any kind of pressure on his opponent. The double fault from Quinn to end the match summed up his performance.

Match of the Day

The fantastic four-set thriller between Cameron Norrie and Frances Tiafoe stood out as the match of the day due to its intensity, high quality, and dramatic momentum shifts. Both players hit a combined 105 winners and just 56 unforced errors, which speaks volumes about the level of play. There were some incredible shot-making and also nervy moments, which made this match intriguing.

After dropping the first set 4-6, Norrie battled back formidably and took advantage of Tiafoe’s significant drop in first serve percentage. Norrie started to extend the rallies with his counter-punching and outlasted his opponent. A critical moment came at 4-4 in the second set when Norrie was 0-40 down. He was in danger of giving Tiafoe a two-set lead. However, Norrie dug deep, saving all three break points through a combination of accurate serving and gutsy forehand wins. Seizing the momentum, Norrie broke Tiafoe in the next game, levelling the match and shifting the psychological edge in his favour.

The third set was all Norrie as he elevated his level even more, and Tiafoe’s impatience grew. Norrie’s consistency and ability to mix flat and loopy groundstrokes kept Tiafoe off balance, and he won the third set 6-3. The fourth set was a rollercoaster, with both players raising their intensity in a bid to seize control. The set remained on serve through 5-5 and then the Brit pounced, breaking Tiafoe’s serve after a grueling rally ended with the American netting a backhand. With the crowd roaring, Norrie served out the match with couple of clutch displays towards the end.

Main Photo Credit: Geoff Burke-Imagn Images

Day 3 of the 2025 Wimbledon Championships marked a return to relative stability in the men’s draw after two days of significant upsets.
