But who will secure their place in the round of 32?

Wimbledon Day 3 Predictions

Jordan Thomspon vs Benjamin Bonzi

Ateet: Jordan Thompson came back from a two-set deficit to defeat Vit Kopriva in the first round. It was a high-quality match, but Thompson will need to do a better job of converting break points if he wants to reach the third round. Benjamin Bonzi got the biggest win of his life in the first round against Daniil Medvedev. He played a great match tactically, but what worked against Medvedev may not necessarily work against Thompson. However, Bonzi would still be the favourite if he serves well.

Prediction: Bonzi in 5

Damian: Thompson was far from convincing in the opening round against Kopriva, but fought his way through to a 5-set win. While last year he was one of the best grass-courters on tour, he’s not been able to reach the same heights recently. Bonzi might be higher on confidence after the upset over Medvedev and maybe that will be enough for him to keep going.

Prediction: Bonzi in 4

Ilemona: Thompson looked sharp in his opener and has more grass-court pedigree, but Bonzi’s first-round win was a confidence boost after a rough stretch. This will be their first meeting but everything’s pointing to a potential tight battle. Bonzi’s lack of recent wins on grass might be the difference.

Prediction: Thompson in 5
Embed from Getty Images

Cameron Norrie vs Frances Tiafoe

Ateet: Cameron Norrie did not disappoint the British crowd as he displayed a solid performance to take out the in-form Roberto Bautista Agut in four sets. He will need to show the same level if he wants to defeat Frances Tiafoe, who looked great in his first-round victory. This should be a close match, but the Brit is the slight favourite for me.

Prediction: Norrie in 5

Damian: Will this be a repeat of Roland Garros with Tiafoe struggling in the warm-ups to produce a big run at a Slam? His draw is a bit more difficult this time, including former semifinalist Norrie. The American is still the favorite to get through, but he’ll have to be pretty cautious here and hope Norrie is struggling to find the right plan for the match again.

Prediction: Tiafoe in 5

Ilemona: Could go either way if both show up with their best. Norrie’s counterpunching can frustrate anyone, but Tiafoe’s all-court game makes him dangerous on grass. A few big points might decide it.

Prediction: Tiafoe in 4

Nuno Borges vs Billy Harris

Ateet: Nuno Borges played a fantastic match after dropping the first set against Francisco Cerundolo to get his first win at Wimbledon. It was a huge win for the Portuguese, and it showed in the way he celebrated. Billy Harris got a straight-sets win in the first round, but it was far from a clinical performance, and he will need to improve against Borges.

Prediction: Harris in 5

Damian: Is Harris getting the opportunity of a lifetime here? Maybe. The Brit certainly took advantage of the chance that presented itself when Hurkacz withdrew and dispatched lucky loser Lajovic comfortably. Is Borges good enough on grass that his run has to be over here? Not really and perhaps Harris can keep capitalizing on his big shot.

Prediction: Harris in 5

Ilemona: Borges is the steadier player, but Harris is riding a wave after his first-ever Wimbledon win in front of a home crowd. The Brit’s grass-court form this season has been solid, and the crowd could lift him again. Don’t be surprised if this goes the distance.

Prediction: Harris in 5
Embed from Getty Images

Kamil Majchrzak vs Ethan Quinn

Ateet: Kamil Majchrzak upset Matteo Berrettini in five sets to get one of the biggest wins of his career and his first Wimbledon main draw win. Ethan Quinn also got his first win at Wimbledon by defeating local player Henry Searle. Quinn served brilliantly and will need that against Majchrzak, who did a good job on return against Berrettini.

Prediction: Quinn in 4

Damian: Majchrzak was on a horrible losing run going into Wimbledon and that’s despite having the tools to play well on this surface. But after defeating Berrettini, maybe he’ll feel pretty confident against a power player like Quinn? Good disruption, flat backhand, net skills – sounds like a match he’s already played at this event.

Prediction: Majchrzak in 5

Ilemona: Majchrzak caused one of the biggest upsets in the first round against Berrettini who hasn’t played much this year, while Quinn’s inexperience at this level showed at times in his opener. The Pole’s edge in big-match know-how might be too much, but Quinn’s fearless hitting could keep it interesting.

Prediction: Majchrzak in 4

Main photo credit: Susan Mullane-Imagn Images

Expect an entertaining third day at Wimbledon with 16 matches on the slate at the Championships.
