But who will advance to the second round?

Wimbledon Day 2 Men’s Predictions

Quentin Halys vs August Holmgren

Damian
Holmgren had one of the most insane qualifying campaigns, coming back from a set and a break down in two matches before saving three match points to beat Watanuki. But this is surely the end of the road. The quality in these battles in Roehampton wasn’t great and Halys is just way too strong on grass.
Prediction: Halys in 3

Ilemona
Both are comfortable on faster courts, so this could be a serving shootout. Halys has a bit more experience, but Holmgren’s got the game to keep things close. One or two tiebreaks wouldn’t be a shock.
Prediction: Halys in 5

Shane
Halys is comfortable approaching the net and should do a lot of it on Tuesday. Holmgren also likes the grass, as shown by his performance in qualifying. Is he already worn down? Who’s to say, but I like Halys in this matchup.
Prediction: Halys in 4

Denis Shapovalov vs Mariano Navone

Damian
Navone and grass isn’t really a love affair, but the Argentinian recently saved match points to beat Ofner in Mallorca qualifying. Basavareddy outplayed him so easily a round later and it’s tough to see something else happening here. Yes, Shapovalov tends to be up and down. But he’ll have the space for a lot of messing around here.
Prediction: Shapovalov in 4

Ilemona
Shapovalov’s always unpredictable, which gives Navone a bit of hope. The Argentine prefers clay, but if Shapo’s off rhythm, anything can happen. Still, the Canadian’s firepower is hard to handle on grass.
Prediction: Shapovalov in 3

Shane
Shapovalov is starting to find his form, which is great timing because he has had previous success at these Championships. Navone is a solid clay-courter, but has not shown much on this surface. The Canadian should hit his way into Round 2.
Prediction: Shapovalov in 4

Embed from Getty Images

Lorenzo Sonego vs Jaime Faria

Damian
It was a good qualifying campaign for Faria as his section looked pretty open and he showed it wasn’t. After struggling with his fitness on clay, the Portuguese learned a new surface efficiently and his big weaponry suits the conditions. Considering how mediocre Sonego has been since Australia, he doesn’t seem lost here. But he’s not the favorite.
Prediction: Sonego in 5

Ilemona
Faria is still finding his feet at this level, and Sonego’s game tends to shine on grass. The Italian will try to keep things aggressive and quick. Faria might need time to settle, and that could cost him early.
Prediction: Sonego in 3

Shane
Faria has a terrific all-around game and a very high ceiling. However, Sonego is a mainstay in the third round of Slams. His game is perfectly suited for the grass, and he should use his experience to cruise past the 21-year-old.
Prediction: Sonego in 3

Tommy Paul vs Johannus Monday

Damian
Since they’ll play on a Tuesday, Monday’s done. Sorry, I had to. On a serious note, Monday’s progress this year hasn’t been as rapid as expected despite the obvious potential. Seeing him dispatch Paul right now would be something special and in the longer format it just doesn’t seem all that probable.
Prediction: Paul in 4

Ilemona
Monday’s got a wildcard and a dream draw, but this is a big step up in level. He’ll try to feed off the home crowd and start fast. Paul’s consistency might wear him down, but don’t be surprised if Monday has a moment or two.
Prediction: Paul in 4

Shane
Tommy Paul has been knocking on the door at Slams and is looking to get back to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon. Monday was a terrific college player but still has a ways to go before he competes with the top players on tour.
Prediction: Paul in 3

Main Photo Credit: Geoff Burke – USA TODAY Sports

Day 2 at the Wimbledon Championships marks the start of the second half of the draw, as players begin their main draw campaigns.
