As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match on day four in the German capital – but who will book their spot in the last eight?

WTA Berlin Day 4 Predictions

Marketa Vondrousova vs Diana Shnaider

Head-to-head: Shnaider 1-0 Vondrousova

Marketa Vondrousova had a horrendous time on grass last year. She slipped on this court when she competed 12 months ago and then relinquished her Wimbledon title at the first hurdle just weeks later. But the Czech will be in a buoyant mood as she takes to the court in the round of 16. She produced a buttoned-up performance to beat Madison Keys in her opener. Diana Shnaider was the only woman to win titles on all three surfaces last season in a true measure of her versatility and adaptability and she’s off to an excellent start in this tournament after a downing Wimbleodon semifinalist Donna Vekic 6-2 6-4. With Vondrousova’s recent injury now resolved, she’ll be the favorite to sneak into the last eight.

Prediction: Vondrousova in 3
Embed from Getty Images

Amanda Anisimova vs Magdalena Frech

Head-to-head: first meeting

Amanda Anisimova and Magdalena Frech did not look likely to be competing for a spot in the WTA Berlin Open quarterfinals. Anisimova was coming off a long week at Queen’s in London where she made the final and admittedly was likely to be fatigued. Frech drew the short straw of facing Mirra Andreeva. Both players overcame the odds. Anisimova showed little weariness in beating Bianca Andreescu in straight sets and Frech pulled off one of the shocks of the tournament. It is still Anisimova that is expected to advance but Frech’s stutbborness will make this a competitive affair.

Prediction: Anisimova in 3
Embed from Getty Images

Elena Rybakina vs Katerina Siniakova

Head-to-head: Rybakina 4-3 Siniakova

Elena Rybakina celebrated her 26th birthday with a convincing straight sets win against Ashlyn Krueger in the opening round. Katerina Siniakova, meanwhile, has tallied three wins in the tournament with two of those in qualifying. As far as tests go this should be a good one for Rybakina. The Czech is a multidimensional player with so much craft and will pose a serious threat on these slick courts. This might be a lot closer than what the odds suggest and Rybakina will need to go through a few gears to get the win.

Prediction: Rybakina in 3
Embed from Getty Images

Coco Gauff vs Wang Xinyu

Head-to-head: Gauff 1-0 Wang

Coco Gauff’s second Grand Slam title might have kickstarted a potential charge at the number one ranking. It’s not out of reach, but the American will need to do a lot of winning this swing. She is a two-time semifinalist in Berlin. Wang Xinyu is not to be underestimated here. The Chinese world #49 defeated two-time Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur in the final round of qualifying and upset Daria Kasatkina in the main draw. Still, Gauff is the clear-cut favourite to progress. The newly crowned French Open champion has not lost an opening match in months and it’s unlikely to happen in Berlin.

Prediction: Gauff in 2

Main photo credit: Susan Mullane-Imagn Images

On what should be an entertaining fourth day at the WTA Berlin Tennis Open, eight players will battle for a spot in the quarterfinals as the tournament reaches the halfway point.
