All the matches on Day 1 in Nottingham are between players meeting for the first time, adding uncertainty to the outcome. However, we still offer our predictions on who will make it to the next round.

WTA Nottingham Day 1 Predictions

Yulia Putintseva vs Hannah Klugman

Head–to–Head: First Meeting

Yulia Putintseva will leverage her experience to overcome the emerging British talent, Hannah Klugman. The Ukrainian player is 14 years older than the young Brit, who has played most of her tennis at the ITF level.

Putintseva secured the title in Birmingham last year and has strong grass-court credentials.

Klugman recently became the first British player in 49 years to reach the junior finals at the French Open, and while the audience will undoubtedly support the teenager, Putintseva will have the upper hand with her superior skill and experience in this matchup.
Prediction: Putintseva in 2

Leylah Fernandez vs Suzan Lamens

Head–to–Head: First Meeting

Leylah Fernandez will seek to break a four-match losing streak against Suzan Lamens. The Canadian, seeded fourth, was eliminated in her first match at Queen’s but reached the final at Eastbourne a year ago.

Lamens recently reached the quarterfinals in Hertogenbosch but still has limited experience on grass overall. However, she will pose a challenge for Fernandez since she has fared better on this surface this year.
Prediction: Lamens in 3

Embed from Getty Images

Aliaksandra Sasnovich vs Zhu Lin

Head–to–Head: First Meeting

Aliaksandra Sasnovich will be looking to gain the upper hand over Lin Zhu in a match featuring two players trying to return after periods away from the game. The Chinese player, currently ranked 307th in the world, has been competing at lower levels recently due to missing much of the latter part of last season.

Sasnovich has also faced challenges in making a significant impact in major tournaments this year, but she is a former semi-finalist at Hertogenbosch, while Zhu reached the semifinals in Birmingham two years ago.

Both players clearly have talent on grass courts, so the outcome hinges on which one can seize control in a matchup between two individuals not performing at the level they aspire to; it wouldn’t be surprising if the match went the full distance, but I expect the Belarusian to come out on top.
Prediction: Sasnovich in 3

Clara Tauson vs Kimberly Birrell

Head–to–Head: First Meeting

Clara Tauson might be the second seed, but that is solely due to her position in the world rankings. It does not reflect her performance on grass; she has lost seven out of nine matches and has only secured victories in qualifiers.

In contrast, Kimberly Birrell has experienced significantly more success on this surface, although she has not yet made it to Wimbledon. This year, she has already demonstrated good form on grass, reaching the quarter-finals in Birmingham.

Tauson is on the verge of breaking into the Top #20, and she will want this more than the Australian.
Prediction: Tauson in 3

Main Photo Credit: Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

The countdown to Wimbledon continues with the WTA “warm-up” in Nottingham as we prepare for the big one.
