Her name is Iva Jovic, a 17-year-old from Torrance, California, who has claimed her first WTA 125 Challenger title in Ilkley.

Jovic’s Breakthrough Week

Jovic’s road to the title was far from easy. She needed three sets to get through each of her first three matches. But once she found her rhythm, she was unstoppable. In the semifinals, she crushed Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic 6-0 6-3–a former Wimbledon quarterfinalist (2021). In the final, she rolled past the reigning champion, Canada’s Rebecca Marino, 6-3 6-1, capping off a spectacular week.

This is not only Jovic’s first WTA 125 title, but also her first career title on grass. Thanks to this result, she is set to debut in the WTA top 100–a remarkable feat, considering she began the year ranked No. 191. With this surge of over 100 spots in less than six months, Jovic is projected to be ranked inside the top 90 on Monday, June 16th. She will also become the youngest player in the top 100 and the youngest WTA 125 champion in history, edging out fellow American Cici Bellis by just 42 days. Bellis won her first WTA 125 title in Honolulu in 2016, also at age 17.

A Season to Remember

The 2025 season has already been unforgettable for Jovic. She has won three titles on three different surfaces: hard (in spring), clay (in Charlottesville), and grass (in Ilkley). She has also begun to make her mark on the sport’s biggest stages, including the Grand Slams. After earning a win at the 2024 US Open, she followed up with second-round appearances at both the 2025 Australian Open and the French Open, honoring the wild cards she received. She also notched a win at Indian Wells this year, where she even took a set off Jasmine Paolini before falling in three.

Embed from Getty Images

Now: Wimbledon

Next up for Jovic is a short break before heading to London to prepare for Wimbledon. At the moment, she’s expected to compete in the qualifying draw, as her ranking wasn’t high enough to guarantee direct entry. However, there’s a real chance she could receive a wild card. Traditionally, the tournament has awarded one to the men’s Ilkley Challenger winner. Now that the women’s event has been upgraded to a WTA 125 in 2025, she may be rewarded in similar fashion. Wild card or not, one thing is clear: Jovic is one to watch in London.

Main Photo Credit: Jonathan Hui-Imagn Images

The golden moment of American women’s tennis shows no signs of slowing down. Just a week after Coco Gauff’s triumph at the French Open–the latest milestone of a brilliant season following Madison Keys’ victory at the Australian Open and a dominant American presence in the top 10 (with Gauff, Pegula, Keys, and Navarro)–another young star has […]

[2,9,4
807,17814,42396,3871,288
post-85178","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-featured","category-news","category-wta","tag-american-tennis","tag-ilkley-challenger","tag-iva-jovic","tag-rebecca-marino","tag-viktorija-golubic
["GET
