Moutet pushed the Serb with some trick shots and tweeners, but it wasn’t enough to scare the 24-time Grand Slam champion. Djokovic is looking to win his fourth French Open title this year.

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner ended the decades-long career of Frenchman Richard Gasquet in a straight-sets win on Court Philippe-Chatrier. Gasquet fired 22 winners to 29 unforced errors in an admirable effort, but the Italian’s power was too much. Sinner won 85% of points off his first serve, and only faced three break points throughout the match.

João Fonseca and Jack Draper set up a mouthwatering third-round matchup after they each battled past tough second-round opponents. Draper’s win was the more impressive of the two; he defeated Gael Monfils in front of a night crowd with 59 winners, hitting strong forehands and breaking down the Frenchman’s exciting game. After Monfils used his energy and crowd support to win the second set, Draper won 6-3 4-6 6-3 7-5.

Embed from Getty Images

Alexander Zverev faced a slow start in his second-round match, but his serve and aggression improved in a 3-6 6-1 6-2 6-3 win over Jesper De Jong. The German hit 43 winners to 43 unforced errors in the match.

Who Looked Bad

Two seeds fell in heartbreaking five-set defeats on Thursday: World No. 9 Alex De Minaur and World No. 19 Jakub Mensik. De Minaur lost 2-6 2-6 6-4 6-3 6-2 to Alexander Bublik, while Mensik succumbed to Henrique Rocha 2-6 1-6 6-4 6-3 6-3. De Minaur was notably too defensive — as Bublik’s confidence increased, he threw in thrilling drop shots and huge second serves that caught the Aussie off guard. Meanwhile, Mensik, coming off a huge ATP 1000 title in Miami, is yet to make a tour-level semifinal since his March win.

Denis Shapovalov, the 27th seed, was stunned on Thursday by Filip Misolic, an Austrian ranked just outside the cusp of the Top 150 before the start of the tournament. Misolic hit 56 winners, while 66 unforced errors from Shapovalov dented the Canadian’s chances as he tried to fight back deep into a fifth set. In the end, Misolic won 7-6(5) 7-6(6) 4-6 4-6 6-3.

Match of the Day

There were multiple contenders for a match of the day on Day 5 — five of 16 matches, in fact, extended into a final set. Ethan Quinn, a young American making his French Open debut, wowed fans in a 7-5 fifth-set win over Alexander Shevchenko. The match included a stunning 92 winners from the American, with the contest capped off with a big forehand cross-court winner from Quinn.

I’d argue the match of the day was Arthur Fils’ breakthrough fifth set win over Jaume Munar; a 7-6(3) 7-6(4) 2-6 0-6 6-4 win saw Fils claw back from a break down in the fifth set. Stepping up with his forehand, the Frenchman hit 20 winners in the fifth set alone to work the crowd’s way into the finale. Fils also faced some injury concerns midway through the match. He did hit 84 unforced errors during the match, a number that likely will have to improve against the power-hitting Andrey Rublev in the third round.

Main Photo Credit: Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Thirty-two men’s tennis title hopefuls now remain at the 2025 French Open, following an exciting Thursday of second-round action.
