The three-time defending champion (2021-22, 2024) hasn’t reached a final for almost a year and has been looking shaky mentally of late. Can Danielle Collins make her work for it, just like she’s done in plenty of their previous meetings? Who do you think will prevail at WTA Rome?

WTA Rome Day 5 Predictions

Diana Shnaider vs Jaqueline Cristian

Head-to-head: 1-1

It appears that the exciting partnership of Diana Shnaider and Dinara Safina has ended before it properly began, but nonetheless, the Russian had her best tournament of the season in Madrid and seems to be getting back on the right track. In the second round, she was ruthless in not allowing Caroline Dolehide to claim even one game. Jaqueline Cristian will make this one more competitive (not a tough bar to clear), but the favorite is clear, and it’s the 21-year-old up-and-comer.
Prediction: Shnaider in 2

Elise Mertens vs Jessica Pegula

Head-to-head: Mertens 3-1

Jessica Pegula was trailing this head-to-head 0-3 before their match at the Australian Open this year, but it didn’t stop her from outclassing Elise Mertens on that occasion. Can a different surface improve the Belgians’ chances? Perhaps, Rome is not the favorite event on the calendar for Pegula, given how flat she hits the forehand. While undeniably very consistent on the tour, she probably still deserves the nod here, as Mertens is not exactly in the prime of her career anymore.
Prediction: Pegula in 3

Embed from Getty Images

Jelena Ostapenko vs Laura Siegemund

Head-to-head: Ostapenko 1-0

Laura Siegemund used her lucky loser opportunity very confidently when she dispatched Lucia Bronzetti in the second round. She’s also not without a shot here, as while Jelena Ostapenko can have way too much firepower ready for this clash, she continues to be an extremely mercurial player. The loss to Anastasija Sevastova in Madrid two weeks ago was a perfect example. You can never fully trust Ostapenko, but especially at this stage of their careers, it’s surely on her racket.
Prediction: Ostapenko in 2

Iga Swiatek vs Danielle Collins

Head-to-head: Swiatek 7-1

7-1 head-to-head looks pretty nice for Iga Swiatek, but the reality is she often needs to fight in this matchup. Danielle Collins has expressed some animosity towards her, and while it’s a one-sided beef, it seems to be giving the American even more motivation. But Swiatek has found a way most of the time and should probably continue to do so. This is a very important event to her on a mental level, can’t afford to lose the stronghold she’s had in slower clay conditions over the years.
Prediction: Swiatek in 2

Main Photo Credit: Mike Frey – Imagn Images

Iga Swiatek dropped just one game in her opening-round match against Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
