Many lower-ranked clay specialists are looking to get some important ranking points and start a run at ATP Rome, including Matteo Arnaldi squaring off against veteran Roberto Bautista Agut. It will certainly be another great day of tennis at the Foro Italico, but who will advance?

ATP Rome Day 2 Predictions

Nuno Borges vs Thiago Seyboth Wild

Head-to-head: Seyboth Wild 2-0 Borges

Borges is easily the more consistent player of the two, but Seyboth Wild definitely has the level to beat him, as shown by the fact that he won both of their matchups (both in 2024) in straight sets. Borges had a great run to the last 16 here last year, one that will be very tough to repeat. This first round will be very hard to negotiate. It’s pretty much a fifty-fifty match that could go either way.

Prediction: Seyboth Wild in 3

Jesper De Jong vs Alexander Shevchenko

Head-to-head: first meeting

De Jong played a great match to beat João Fonseca last week, but couldn’t really reproduce that level in his next match in Estoril or in qualifying here (made the main draw as a lucky loser). That said, Shevchenko isn’t quite comfortable on clay, and on a slow clay court like this, De Jong should have the slight edge and make it through to the second round.

Prediction: De Jong in 3

Embed from Getty Images

Gabriel Diallo vs Marcos Giron

Head-to-head: first meeting

Diallo had a really nice run last week in Madrid, winning several tough matches en route to the quarterfinals, where he lost to Musetti. He has shown a far higher level on clay than Giron has so far, and if he can maintain it, he should be able to advance here and continue his steady rise through the ATP rankings. While Giron is a solid player on faster surfaces, he’s unlikely to make any significant inroads on clay.

Prediction: Diallo in 2

Matteo Arnaldi vs Roberto Bautista Agut

Head-to-head: first meeting

While Bautista admirably keeps fighting to stay an ATP-level player, Arnaldi has been steadily rising and will be especially motivated after he beat Novak Djokovic en route to the quarterfinals in Madrid. If he can play anywhere close to the level he showed in the Spanish capital, he should be able to make it through here in his home Masters 1000.

Prediction: Arnaldi in 2

Main Photo Credit: Geoff Burke – USA TODAY Sports

Day 2 at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Rome will not feature the seeds, but there are still many exciting and high-quality matches in prospect.
