That win ended a nine-match losing streak for the Brazilian. She is a former quarterfinalist in Rome and will look to get some match wins this week. Marie Bouzkova got a good win in the first round over Mayar Sherif. Bouzkova has never won against Haddad Maia, but all four of their encounters were three-setters, and three of them went to the deciding set tie break. Given Haddad Maia’s recent form, Bouzkova has a chance to win.

Prediction: Bouzkova in 3

Karolina Muchova vs Lucia Bronzetti

Head-to-Head: first meeting

Karolina Muchova hasn’t played a match in over a month and is set to play her first match on clay this season. Muchova is good on every surface, and it shouldn’t take her much time to find her rhythm on the dirt. If she remains healthy, she can make a deep run here in Rome. Lucia Bronzetti won her first match in Rome in the first round, but I don’t like her chances to progress any further. She is a capable player on this surface, but Muchova’s level might be too much for the Italian.

Prediction: Muchova in 2

Jelena Ostapenko vs Rebecca Sramkova

Head-to-Head: Ostapenko 2-0 Sramkova

Embed from Getty Images

Jelena Ostapenko has been inconsistent this season, but her best level is still scary, as she showcased in Stuttgart, where she defeated Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka to win the title. Ostapenko is a former French Open champion and has played brilliantly in the last two editions of the Italian Open. Rebecca Sramkova excelled behind her first serve in the first round with a 73% win rate, but Ostapenko would be a completely different challenge for the Slovakian player.

This is a rematch of their 2024 Rome fourth-round clash, where Sramkova used her defense and Ostapenko’s power to redirect pace and won the first set. However, it was not sustainable as her serve started getting demolished, and Ostapenko overpowered her eventually. I expect a similar outcome.

Prediction: Ostapenko in 3

Jessica Pegula vs Ashlyn Krueger

Head-to-Head: Pegula 4-0 Krueger

No.3 seed Jessica Pegula will start her Rome campaign against her compatriot, Ashlyn Krueger. Pegula had a shocking loss in Madrid and will look to get back on track with a strong performance. She has not lost a single set against Krueger, but this is their first meeting on clay. Krueger has already won a match and will hope for a better fight. However, Krueger is still figuring out her game on clay, so I can’t choose her to pull off the upset.

Prediction: Pegula in 2

Main Photo Credit: Mike Frey-USA TODAY Sports

Second-round action will begin on Day 3 of the WTA Italian Open, and lots of intriguing matches are on the slate.
