He fell to Mariano Navone in the first round in Bucharest and could not progress past qualifying at Monte-Carlo. Although he secured a win against Francisco Comesana, he lost to Dusan Lajovic in the final qualifying round.

Nonetheless, he successfully navigated the qualifying rounds here and is set to face Arthur Rinderknech, who enters the main draw as a lucky loser. So far this season, Rinderknech’s best result has been a round-of-16 finish at the Delray Beach Open in February, but his recent performances have been lackluster. He was eliminated in the first round at the Phoenix Challenger event and the Miami Open, and he couldn’t qualify for Monte-Carlo.

The two players have faced each other twice, trading wins. Djere emerged victorious in their only encounter on clay, and he will win a second here in Barcelona to progress to the next round.

Prediction: Djere in 3

Casper Ruud vs Daniel Elahi Galan

Head–to–Head: Ruud 4 vs 0 Elahi

Colombian Daniel Elahi Galan successfully qualified to enter the main draw, defeating Jacob Fearnley in the final qualifying match. A specialist on clay surfaces, he has won several titles on the Challenger tour, but he is yet to win an ATP title.e

Although he did participate in the Houston Open, Mackenzie McDonald eliminated him in the first round. His next opponent will be defending champion Casper Ruud, who fell to a disappointing loss to Alexei Popyrin in the round of 16 at Monte-Carlo despite serving for the match twice.

While the Colombian can be a tricky player on this surface, it is also where the Norwegian thrives the most and anything short of a comfortable win to begin his title defense will be a rude shock.

Prediction: Ruud in 2.

Arthur Fils vs Pablo Carreno Busta

Head–to–Head: First Meeting

Embed from Getty Images

Pablo Carreno Busta has received a wildcard entry for the Barcelona Open. The 33-year-old, who had a career high ranking of #10, is currently outside the top 100.

His most recent tournament was a Challenger event in Madrid, where he won two consecutive matches before being eliminated in the quarter-finals. He is set to compete against Arthur Fils, who reached his third consecutive Masters 1000 quarter-final in Monte-Carlo.

Fils displayed impressive form, losing his serve only once in three matches before falling to Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals. The French number one had opportunities to win the match, even leading by a break in the final set, but ultimately could not clinch the match.

Regardless, it was another positive tournament for the young talent, and he will start strong in Barcelona with a statement win.

Prediction: Fils in 2.

Karen Khachanov vs Cameron Norrie

Head–to–Head: Khachanov 4 vs 3 Norrie

Karen Khachanov had a couple of chances to win his opener against compatriot Daniil Medvedev at Monte-Carlo before ultimately losing in three sets. He should draw some positive insights from parts of his performance in that match and aim to build on these as he seeks a deep run in a tournament for the first time in recent times.

He is up against a familiar foe, Cameron Norrie, who successfully navigated through qualifying with victories over Hugo Gaston and Damir Dzumhur. Norrie has had a challenging season, with his best result being a quarter-final finish at the Delray Beach Open in February. His initial outings in the clay season haven’t been particularly encouraging either, as he didn’t make it to the Monte-Carlo main draw.

While Khachanov holds a slight advantage in their head-to-head meetings, though they are tied on clay, the Brit seems to be experiencing some resurgence and looked very solid in the qualifiers against very tricky opponents. It won’t be surprising to see him edge the Russian and even their head-to-head.

Prediction: Norrie in 3.

Main Photo Credit: Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Several exciting matches are lined up for the second day here in Barcelona.
