Four withdrawals, including from a Top 5 player and former US Open finalist, weakened the entry list somewhat. We at LWOT report on those no longer playing and name their replacements on the entry list.

Four Players Withdraw From BMW Open

Which Players Have Withdrawn?

Taylor Fritz was the highest-ranked player to withdraw from the BMW Open. The American could not compete at the ongoing Monte Carlo Masters because of a recurrence of an abdominal injury. Fritz initially sustained the problem in February but seemed to be over it when he played at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells and the Miami Open. However, the problem reemerged in Miami and has not healed in time for the tournament in Munich.

Hubert Hurkacz was the second player to withdraw from the BMW Open. The 2023 Shanghai Masters champion missed the Miami Open and Monte Carlo Masters because of a lower back injury, and remains sidelined due to it. That is Hurkacz’s third physical issue in the last nine months, after knee and calf injuries last year.

Zhizhen Zhang was the third player to withdraw from the event in Munich. He has not featured on the ATP Tour since losing to Gabriel Diallo in the opening round of the BNP Paribas Open. His absence is somewhat mysterious since the Chinese star has not publicly revealed a physical problem or other reason.

Roberto Carballes Baena was the final player to remove himself from the BMW Open entry list. The Spaniard played during the opening week of the clay court season at the Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakech, losing in the semifinal to the eventual champion Luciano Darderi. He was initially going to be Zhang’s replacement, but a place opened up at his home tournament in Barcelona instead.

Who Replaces Those Players on the Entry List?

Miami Open champion Jakub Mensik enters the BMW Open entry list after Fritz’s decision to withdraw. The 19-year-old was not initially planning to play in Munich, but withdrew from the Monte Carlo Masters to get more recovery time after his epic run in Miami. Mensik will be among the eight seeded players after his late addition to the entry list.

The experienced David Goffin replaces Hurkacz at the ATP 500 tournament. He generated worldwide headlines after stunning Carlos Alcaraz in the round of 64 at the Miami Open. The Belgian has been an all-court player throughout his career and is unlikely to make it easy for any opponent with his solid game from the baseline.

Jaume Munar takes Zhang’s place at the BMW Open, which was initially going to be handed to Carballes Baena. The Spaniard lost his opening two matches of the clay court swing against Kamil Majchrzak at the Grand Prix Hassan II and Daniel Altmaier in the Monte Carlo Masters qualifying round. He will have a chance to get a first win next week.

Quentin Halys is set to play his opening clay court match of 2025 in Munich. His last appearance was in the round of 64 at the Miami Open, where he lost a dramatic battle against Lorenzo Musetti 7-5 in the third set. Halys’ sole ATP final came on clay at last year’s 2024 Swiss Open in Gstaad. Matteo Berrettini defeated the Frenchman in the final.

Main Photo Credit: Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Next week’s BMW Open in Munich will be played at the same time as the Barcelona Open.
