Main draw action will commence on May 6th for the women’s tournament and the men’s tournament a day later. The event will observe a two-week schedule culminating with the two finals on May 18th.

The men’s draw will witness the return of Jannik Sinner, who spearheads the field. The World No. 1’s doping ban will expire on May 4th, and he will be eligible to play again. This will mark his first tournament since winning the Australian Open in January.

The women’s draw is led by Aryna Sabalenka. The Belarusian reached the final in last year’s tournament but lost to arch-rival Iga Swiatek. The Pole has won three of the last four editions of the WTA Rome and has not lost before the quarterfinals since 2020.

In addition to being a very competitive field, the tournament has listed ten players who are beneficiaries of main draw wild cards.

Ten Players Receive Italian Open Wild Cards

The list is heavily dominated by Italian players, which is not a huge surprise. The first wild card has gone to former quarterfinalist Fabio Fognini. The 37-year-old’s recent post on Instagram could indicate that his playing days are numbered, and this might be his last appearance in Rome.

The second wild card is Luca Nardi. This will be his fourth appearance in the main draw. Nardi has recorded one main draw win at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia.

The third wild card is Francesco Passaro, who is also making his fourth main draw appearance in Rome. He broke into the Top 100 earlier this season but needs a productive week to stay in that position before the French Open.

The fourth and final wild card in the men’s draw is Federico Cina. The 17-year-old made his ATP debut in Miami last month and notched his first Tour-level win there. If he is to add a second win, then Rome might be the perfect setting for him.

Next stop: 𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐄 🚍

🌟 Fabio & more — follow the thread to discover our @atptour main draw wild cards!#IBI25 pic.twitter.com/0BYrWz0hrq

— Internazionali BNL d'Italia (@InteBNLdItalia) April 9, 2025

Former World No. 5 Sara Errani leads the women’s list of wild cards. It is 11 years since Errani last reached a final in Rome (lost to Serena Williams in straight sets), but she won the doubles tournament last year while partnering Jasmine Paolini. And she will also draw plenty of encouragement from her singles win over Amanda Anisimova 12 months ago.

The second women’s wild card entrant is Elisabetta Cocciaretto. The 24-year-old’s recent ranking slump meant that she was ineligible for direct entry into the main draw.

The third wild card in the women’s draw is World No. 149 Lucrezia Stefanini, who earned a first-ever main draw win in Rome last season.

Nuria Brancaccio is the fourth Italian name on this list. She is ranked just outside the Top 200 and is yet to win a match in 2025. She has played in two previous main draws at her home tournament but lost at the first hurdle.

The fifth wild card is 20-year-old Georgia Pedone. Like Brancaccio, she is still chasing her first win of the season. Pedone is one a seven-match losing streak and is a regular on the ITF Tour. This will be her second main draw in Rome.

The only non-Italian wild card is Tyra Caterina Grant. The 17-year-old American is a two-time ITF champion and has compiled an 11-5 record in 2025. She made her WTA debut in Miami and lost in the first round to Julia Grabher. Caterina Grant has played 13 clay-court matches before this season.

Main photo credit: Jonathan Hui-USA TODAY Sports

The Italian Open in Rome, Italy, is the final ATP Masters and WTA 1000 tournament before the French Open.
