This installment includes the WTA players ranked 1-5.

WTA 2016 Year in Review: Top 5

Angelique Kerber

It was a banner year for Angelique Kerber as she bookended her year with Major titles while also capturing the #1 ranking from Serena Williams.

High points:

Kerber started her season with her first Major title at the Australian Open, saving match point in the opening round against Misaki Doi. In the quarterfinals, she rallied from 5-1 down in the second set to defeat Victoria Azarenka, her first ever win over the two-time Melbourne winner. In the final, the German stunned Serena Williams in three sets for her first Grand Slam title.

Kerber claimed her second Major title at the US Open, dominating her first six opponents before contesting one of the matches of the year, a three-set classic in the defeating Karolina Pliskova, coming from 3-1 down in the final. The victory also earned her the World #1 ranking, ending Serena’s streak of 186 consecutive weeks at the top.

Low points:

It’s hard to say someone had a low point in a season she dominated, but if there was one, it was Kerber’s first-round loss to Kiki Bertens at the French Open by a score of 6-2 3-6 6-3. The loss looks slightly better as Bertens would go on to reach the semifinals.

Other highlights:

Kerber repeated as Stuttgart champion while also reaching the Wimbledon, Olympic, Cincinnati, and WTA Championships finals.

Outlook for 2017:

While her lead is substantial, the German has a ton of points to defend throughout the upcoming season. No matter her position in 12 months’ time, it’s been a storybook year for Kerber that should see her remain, at worst–barring injury or something catastrophic–in the Top 3.

Serena Williams

For the long-time #1, it was a disappointing year as injuries and unexpected losses plagued her year.

High point:

Undoubtedly, the win over Kerber to claim her 22nd career Grand Slam title at Wimbledon was the best moment of the year for Williams. In the third round, she escaped from a set down to defeat Christina McHale. Otherwise, it was a routine Slam for Williams, although Kerber tested her in the final with the American coming out on top by a 6-3 7-5 score.

Embed from Getty Images

Low point:

Williams lost in the semifinals or later three times at Majors in 2016, but her 6-4 6-3 third round loss at the Olympics to Elina Svitolina was by far her worst performance in a very long time. Looking lethargic and uninterested, Williams was dumped out by the Ukranian in stunningly easy fashion.

Other highlights: As mentioned, Williams did reach the Australian and French Open final as well as the US Open semifinals, but was upset by Kerber, Garbine Muguruza and Karolina Pliskova, respectively. She did win Rome and was runner-up to Victoria Azarenka at Indian Wells. In addition to the Wimbledon singles title, she also won the doubles title with sister Venus.

Outlook for 2017: While it’s always dangerous to count Serena out, she will be 36 two weeks after next year’s US Open and after shutting down her season early for the second straight year, serious questions arise for the first time in a while as to whether or not she can regain her #1 ranking even if Kerber doesn’t defend all of her points from 2016.

Agnieszka Radwanska

It was another banner year for the Pole, despite reaching just one Grand Slam semifinal.

High point:

Radwanska won three titles in 2016, but her Australian Open semifinal appearance qualifies as her best moment. After dominating her first four opponents, she needed a 7-5 third set squeaker against Anna-Lena Friedsam to reach the last four.

Low point:

While Radwanska suffered quite a few upsets, like Williams, her lowest moment was at the Olympics, losing 6-4, 7-5 to Saisai Zheng of China. Zheng needed a special ITF placement just to qualify.

Other highlights:

Radwanska’s three tournament wins were in Shenzhen, New Haven, and Beijing while reaching the semifinals of Indian Wells, Stuttgart, Tokyo, and the WTA Finals in Singapore, where she–the defending champion–lost to Kerber.

Outlook for 2017:

Radwanska will be what she always is: consistent, steady, mostly error-free, but unable to win a Slam due to her lack of power, which always comes back to haunt her, as was the case at the U.S. Open, where she was overpowered by Ana Konjuh. A Top 5 and likely Top 3 ranking awaits, but nothing more significant will be on the horizon.

Embed from Getty Images

Simona Halep

In her first full year under Darren Cahill, the Romanian was once again steady, placing in the Top 5.

High point:

Winning her second Premier Mandatory title of her career, Halep defeated players such as Timea Bacsinszky, Samantha Stosur, and Dominika Cibulkova in Madrid. This followed Indian Wells in 2015.

Embed from Getty Images

Low point:

Without a doubt, her 6-4 6-3 first round loss to Shuai Zhang at the Australian Open was by far Halep’s worst loss of the year and one of the worst in her career. The upset was only magnified when realizing Zhang had never won a Grand Slam singles match in 14 previous tries.

Other highlights:

Halep added Bucharest and Canada to her trophy case, defeating Anastasija Sevastova and Madison Keys in those finals, respectively. She also managed to reach the semifinals of Sydney and Wuhan.

Outlook for 2017:

Much like Radwanska, Halep lacks major firepower. The difference between the two is that Halep can penetrate the court somewhat with her groundstrokes. Another year under Cahill’s tutelage should serve her well and a possible Slam final is not out of the question.

Dominika Cibulkova

It was a ho-hum year for the Slovakian until the final two weeks of the season, culminating in her biggest win to date.

High point:

Winning the WTA Finals in Singapore was Cibulkova’s finest performance. She upset Kerber 6-3, 6-4 in the final after barely making the knockout stages. Cibulkova had to beat Halep just to qualify for the semifinals.

Embed from Getty Images

Low point:

Cibulkova’s wedding was two days after her Wimbeldon quarterfinal match against Elena Vesnina and she seemed to have her mind more on that as the Russian took her apart 6-2 6-2. If possible, the scoreline wasn’t even that close.

Other highlights:

The Slovakian won Katowice, Eastbourne, and Linz as well as reaching the finals of Acapulco, Madrid and Wuhan, highlighting her all-court skills as she played at least one final on every different surface possible.

Outlook for 2017:

Cibulkova isn’t exactly the most consistent player on tour, so it’s hard to say how she’ll perform in 2017. She could be anywhere from her current ranking of #5 to the Top 20. One thing is for sure: the “Pocket Rocket” will be good for a surprise or two.

Main Photo:

Embed from Getty Images

This offseason, Last Word On Tennis will be looking back at the seasons of the top 50 players on each tour.
