There were no break points faced by the top seed who picked up her 13th match win of 2025. Lucia Bronzetti has exceeded expectations with impressive wins over Anhelina Kalinina and 30th seed Magdalena Frech. But with Sabalenka’s game firing on all cylinders early in the tournament, this could spell bad news for the Italian.
Prediction: Sabalenka in 2

Belinda Bencic vs Diana Shnaider

Head-to-head: first meeting

Bencic is coming off a very impressive three-set win over Doha champion Amanda Anisimova. The performance gave us a full picture of Bencic’s game. It’s not just rooted in strategy but also mental toughness. Her comeback couldn’t have gone any better. Shnaider was equally brilliant in brushing aside Alycia Parks 6-1 6-1. But it’s been a stuttering start to the year from the young Russian who had a 6-6 record before Indian Wells. Bencic’s experience here will be valuable as is her ability to retrieve near-certain winners by Shnaider and reset points.
Prediction: Bencic in 2

Embed from Getty Images

Daria Kasatkina vs Liudmila Samsonova

Head-to-head: first meeting

Kasatkina was on the brink of defeat in her opening match but a late fightback earned her a precious win over a resurgent Sofia Kenin. Samsonova was also tested by the fit-again Caty McNally, saving multiple set points in the first set en route to a 7-6 6-4 win. Stylistically, Kasatkina should use all her court craft to neutralize Samsonova’s ground stroke power. If she gets through that early barrage of heavy hitting from her compatriot, she’ll probably labor to another hard-fought win.
Prediction: Kasatkina in 3

Coco Gauff vs Maria Sakkari

Head-to-head: Sakkari 5-3 Gauff

Gauff’s first win since the Australian Open was long overdue. But the 20-year-old might abstain from looking at the stats sheet. She recorded over 60 unforced errors including a mind-boggling 21 double faults. It wasn’t pretty although she got the job done. The most important thing is that she snapped a rare three-match losing streak. Sakkari enjoys her trips to California. She defeated Gauff in the semifinals last year to reach her second career final in Indian Wells. However, the Greek is bereft of consistency this season and has lost each of her three matches against the top five in recent weeks without winning a set. Expect Gauff’s ironclad defense to see her through.
Prediction: Gauff in 3

Main Photo Credit: Mike Frey-USA TODAY Sports

Eight more spots will be up for grabs for the women looking to reach the last 16 at the WTA BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California.
